I've seen alot of "can it tow" threads..but I'm going for a whole new level
Can it tow....
keystone-montana dot com
the 3600 RE is what I am looking at
as well as
keyperformance-raptor dot com
the 3712TS
I am pretty sure the Raptor is just not going to happen, but am seriously considering the Montana and trying it.I know Nissan likes to brag about the 9500 GVW, and we have all seen the commercials....but you have to figure that number is a very "safe" number. So how much extra do you think the Titan is really capable of..?
Re: I've seen alot of "can it tow" threads..but I'm going for a whole new level
I towed 10000 lbs earlier this week and even though the engine and brakes took the load very well. The truck is not heavy enough for that weight IMO. Forget about any kind of emergency manouvers. If you have your entire family in the truck and are towing over the rated weight you are going to be risking their lives and being irresponsible to all the other drivers.

IMO if you are going to tow 9000 lbs on a semi-regular basis, then it's time for a 3/4 - 1 ton truck.
A lot of people go by the 75% - 80% rule, that is keep the trailer tow weight at no more then 75-80% of the max rated tow capacity, that way you have a safety margin, and the truck will last a lot longer.
That same rule applies to bigger trucks also, not just the 1/2 tons...

I think that is absolutely crazy. The tongue weight is 219% of what it is rated to carry and the trailer weight is 26% over WITHOUT fuel, occupants, propane, water (grey, black and fresh) and your stuff!
That trailer is over 38 feet long. You should go borrow somebody's 38 foot long trailer and tow it on a windy day when the wind is blowing from the side.
If you do buy it, let us all know so we can place bets on when:
a) - your transmission blows
b) - your rear springs give out
c) - the wind flips your vehicle over
d) - whether you ever get more than 5 mpg
e) - how much that rig actually weighs once loaded
f) - how much you end up losing trying to sell the unit after one trip
If you do buy the 3712TS, please take/post pictures of it hitched up to your Titan. I've heard of child abuse and spousal abuse but never heard of anyone being charged with vehicle abuse - you could be the first!
You should go back and read all the "can it tow" threads again....

You have to remember the 9500lb rating is the maximum tow rating, its not something that you want to be towing around on a regular basis, yea the Titan will pull it better then any other 1/2 ton, but I wouldn't be going very far or be doing it very often. I would get a 3/4 ton or even a 1 ton.

I forgot to say I towed 10000 lbs 6 blocks.....very slow! Not on major roads or a highway.

Re: I've seen alot of "can it tow" threads..but I'm going for a whole new level
OK, here is my experience....I have been pulling 11,500 lbs on an occasional basis. Granted it is way over loaded as I didn't weigh it prior to purchase, however, it tows it without any difficulty. I know it is back there but it is quite an impressive vehicle. I am towing a 29 foot Mako fishing boat with twin 225 o/b on a triple axle trailer with three axles of surge brakes and alot of upgrades to the suspension/truck. Now I am in Florida and most land is flat. I have towed to the keys with no problems and have made panic stops as well. Nissan has inspected the truck for me on several occasions and see no issues...now I will never admit to the load. And, should there ever be an issue, it is really, 9,000 lbs. I would never tow this in the mountains, but Florida is a different thing!
Re: I've seen alot of "can it tow" threads..but I'm going for a whole new level
Thanks for the responses.
First off as far as safety goes, naturally if I "felt" it were unsafe after the first tow I would have to step up to a 3/4 ton.I don't feel me towing a fifth wheel that weighs 11,000-12,000 lbs is anywhere near as dangerous as the other drivers out on the roads today.Between the drunks, the drug users, the old people, the teenagers, etc I wouldn't even be tempting fate from my viewpoint.(I do reserve the right to change my opinion once hooked up and pulling it though).
I do not plan on traveling oodles of miles with it.I plan on an occasional jaunt to some property I own for hunting which is only about an hour ride from me.I also do have some other spots that are all with in a 4-6 hour radius. The only other thing I would need to be able to tow it for is the occasional run from a hurricane. So all in all at this point maybe 500 miles a year excluding hurricanes.
I am in Florida so inclines aren't a problem(unless you count overpasses). Also the units are fifth wheels which is a big help.Especially as far as towing and swaying.I do plan on bags for sure. The trailers do have brakes as well so I am not just relying on the truck to get it stopped.I figure on some good ten ply tires won't hurt either.
I'm just kicking it around at this point, but after spending a day in a RV lot I have no plans to go smaller on the trailer/toyhauler.

Agreed, but from a little different perspective. I've towed all kinds of trailers and stuff with a LOT of different tow vehicles. I've even towed a 9,000# sailboat home with a Datsun 620 pickup! (I had to get it out of the dealer's lot; the bank was coming to foreclose on the dealer, and I didn't want to lose it!) I drove the commanding pace of 35 MPH all the way home. And wow, did I feel every little side draft.
You can tow a great big object with a little bitty truck, but the key is "how safe is it going to be?"
The Titan will probably tow it, but at what cost to safety? That trailer is a great big sail in the wind, and the Titan doesn't have enough weight to properly "anchor" it for proper handling. Likely the wind will push on that lever arm and you will immediately be out of control. You said you're going to be running from a hurricane? Don't those involve high winds...?
Don't mean to sound like a troll, but man, somebody's got to say something. You need a diesel or something that weighs about 8,000 pounds for a pickup. We'd hate to lose a TitanTalk member to Darwin...
I heartily suggest rethinking this.

You honestly do need a 3/4 ton. My buddy has a 2500HD w/ the Duramax / allison combo and in ext cab form it weighs about 6500lbs (2WD) and can tow 16000. He tows a ~9K race car trailer and it hardly feels it back there.

I have a Flagstaff 831QBSS, 32' overall length, UVW 6200, GVW 8100, 925lb tongue weight. Use weight distribution hitch and anti sway bar. Had to add helper springs and Timbren SES kit because of tongue weight (differential put dents in my custom exhaust).
I'm well within towing weight ratings and close to max on tongue weight, however, I think I'm at or maybe a little above what I should be towing with Titan. I wouldn't opt for pulling any more.
Recently took the trailer to ND for deer hunting. Had 20 - 30 MPH crosswinds on I94. Not a pleasant towing experience. A shorter trailer would not be affected as much by the wind. With slight head wind, tail wind, or no wind at all, Titan pulls this trailer very well. Had plenty of power and tranny temp stayed normal.
Besides trailer weights, you also have to consider trailer length. Trailer life's web site has a chart of recommended trailer length compared to tow vehicle wheel base. It recommends 29 foot max trailer length for vehicle's with same wheel base as Titan.
Re: I've seen alot of "can it tow" threads..but I'm going for a whole new level
I'm in to the toy haulers as I'm a partial owner of one that I will NOT tow with my truck.
As for those exact models, no do NOT plan on towing with your truck. I have 3 good friends with the raptors (ask them if they've fixed the generator melting compartment door issue). 2 have F350 diesels to tow it, the other has a F550, dbl overdrive, blah blah blah, and they have little trouble, but still notice the weight with their trucks...
The 550 guy had a montana 1st, made 1 trip towing it with a 3/4 ton (gas motor though) and then bought the big truck.
Another issue you have to worry about- 1 guy with a raptor has a short bed and can only turn 1 1/2 locks on the steering wheel or it will hit the cab (he has to release the hitch and slide it back at the campsites). His bed is longer than ours, so not sure how much turning you would be able to do.
Just passing on the information!
