Hey guys, sorry if this is a complete newb question, but i'm hearing the term big tow around alot, and really unsure of what it is and how to get it....
I'm looking to buy a Titan to tow my pro drift car in my 21' enclosed interstate brand trailer. I'm guessing the total package is almost 7k lbs. the car it's self weighs 2400, then tools, tires, and fuel and the trailer.
I need it to go to Cali and back from Washington and I'm a huge Nissan guy, started with my first 86' King cab 4x4, which i'm still driving today, that's why i want a Titan !
i'm looking at new and used, probably will buy used simply becasue it's cheaper, so i'd like to know i'm getting what i need even if it's used!
OH and also, does anyone know the spring rates at all, like GM and such go by 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton....didn't know if Nissan has that.
The "Big tow" package is also simply the "tow package", which is the class iv hitch, 3.36:1 gears, trans temp gauge, higher-capacity battery. If you go to Nissan's website and "build" a Titan it will show you what the tow package adds.
The Titan is a 1/2-ton truck.

i think only the 4x4 has the 3.3s the rest have 2.9s

All BT/tow package come with 3.36 whether it's 4x4 or 4x2, can't get the higher tow rating without them.
hmmm thats odd? i have the tow package and my tag says i have the 2.9... my friend is a tech at a local nissan dealer too... he said the same thing i did
i dont know. maybe my friend and i are wrong?

You sure you have the BT package? You have the extendable side mirrors and the trans temp gauge to the left of the fuel gauge?
I see no reason why the 4x4 would require the 3.36 for BT and the 4x2 wouldn't, they're not that different. The Titan builder on nissanusa.com shows BT gets 3.36 when you build a 4x2 with the tow package.

that'll work but ALL Big Tows have the different rear end. That's basically the whole point of it, other than that you can buy those mirrors on ebay. Thankfully Nissan doesn't rip you off for it. I'm still confused as to how that adds soo much to the tow rating. By truck doesn't have it and my dads does, but his doesn't do any better pulling than mine does (5K lb boat). My KC smokes his CC unladen by a car atleast. Must be all of my railing the throttle and his babying it. Anywho, big tow is kind of a joke in my opinion, there is not even any sort of cooler, and we all know our rear diff is a complete affront to the torque of the motor BT or not. WAY undersized.

Run your truck at about 70 mph. The lower (BT) gears turn about 2k rpm, the higher gears (Non BT) turn about 1500 rpm.
yea im at 2k rpm when up to 70... you do have the right idea about comparing rpms but i havent had any other truck to compare so i wouldnt know... but if you know for a fact then thanks for the useful info...

hey thanx guys for the input! yeah i went to nissan usa and built one and did the tow package, i just heard the big tow being used so much, thought maybe there was another setup.
hey about the springs, what kind of a setup should i be looking for to tow my 7k lbs. trailer nicely down the road, w/o the tail sagging and all that. So far i've used a 1 ton GMC dually, of course that doesn't know it's there haha, but we did add the stabilizer bars to the hitch which should help, any more suggestions?
thanx for the great welcome! hope i'll get to get some pics of it with my drift car, it'll look great together! what can i say, just a huge Nissan guy!

I'm glad to see you have such high regard for the Titan. Now to learn and appreciate it a little more my dear fellow Titaneer.
XE Model BT does not have the big mirrors. SE and LE do.
OR and BT both give the 3.36 gear and heavier springs. I don't recall if a non OR 4x4 has heavier springs or not.
Trans gauge is part of the BT Package, not the OR as far as I know.
3.36 gives the following advantages: Higher engine speed allows higher alternator amperage output and maintain higher horsepower. The Titan does have coolers. It has 2 Transmission coolers on all Titans and a small oil cooler circuit of some type too. 3.36 also allows easier starting of movement, less stress on that wonderfully smooth 5 speed automatic drivetrain. Slightly easier to maintain braking power with the slightly higher engine speed too.
The BT is fairly priced, I agree. I was required to buy the Trac Pkg to get the VX35 BT on my XE, but I wanted it anyway for the Active Brake Limited Slip (ABLS) and Tow hooks. (VX35 is only for XE's, no big mirrors, all the rest of BT is the same) The ABLS may have cost about $300, fair OEM Price. The VX35 BT Pkg only cost $250 list. It was the most outstanding value of my entire truck. That $250 (before discounts/rebates) gave me a Class lV hitch receiver, 7 pole RV outlet, 3.36 gearing, heavier springs, electric brake patch cord and relays installed, and a transmission temperature gauge which are all factory warranteed. That is no Nissan joke in my opinion!
Now, if you'll run down to Advance Auto and price out a Class lV hitch, 7 pole, 2 relays, trans temp gage kit and some sort of patch cord to hook up the brakes (I'll throw in the gears for free), let me know how much that all cost. Don't forget the installation fees at the local trailer shop afterwards. Whew!

The '04 model with BT included VDC along with the mirrors, trans temp gage, hitch, etc. 2005 and later BT option did not include VDC.

i noticed on the 3.36 gears, it states it's like a set of 4.10 gears, is that because it's a 5 speed tranny? i was a bit confused on that, but overall i think this is easily the truck i've been looking for!
I'm wondering about the gears becasue i was stuck 3 hours at a toyota dealer (cuz my fiance's scion) and i decided to ask about the tundra. haha what a joke , but the dealer was trying to tell me that the gears are too low to have 6 people in the truck and tow something, but if the 3.36's actually make more of a 4.10 then that's why, they don't look hard enough into competition.
That does help alot too, i have been finding XE's with BT and no mirrors, that was one of my questions! thanx again to everyone for the help, it's come in really usefull!!!!
ya i guess the gear ratio changes when you have a 4speed or 5 speed. they are supposed to be comparable to 4:10's like if say you have a chevy or whatever. it will give you a little more low end power. trust me its worth it.
