Towing question

Looking into the 06/07 Titab crew cab. I will be pulling a 21ft Outback with equalizer hitch and sway control, that weigh's 5,000lbs, with hitch weight at almost 400 lbs. I know the titan will pull this without issue.

The question is what does everyone thing of adding a 800lb golf cart in the bed of the titan? I am a little concerned with the payload capacity? Anyone tried this with golf cart or 4 wheeler?

Thanks

Re: Towing question

You'll be over your payload capacity, regardless of what model Titan you drive. For that reason, and that one alone I won't recommend it. Could you? Maybe, but probably not on the stock rear springs without help, like bags or helpers.

Your tongue weight should be a minimum of 10 % of your trailer weight. I would bet you are going to have more than 400 lbs on the tongue. A golf cart and the trailer will not be a good idea. Too much weight, you'll be well over your max payload.

Re: Towing question

Ok, I know that he would be over but what if he had the firestone airbags like I do? Over weight? Safe? What is really the deal?

Re: Towing question

I say try it, but I'm not afraid of being a little overweight. I do something similar now. I put a 1200 lb golf cart in the back of my Megacab while pulling my 8000+ lb travel trailer. It sure looks cool while running down the road!

Re: Towing question

You could try some bags or helper springs to increase the payload!

Re: Towing question

You would overweight in any 1/2 ton truck. If you are limiting yourself to a 1/2 ton, then you need to ditch the trailer and get a toy hauler.

Re: Towing question

I'll have to agree with some of the other threads. It's not weight of the travel trailer and golf cart that concerns me.

I pull a 2007 30 ft Jayco Flight travel trailer. I have a major gravel/quarry company down the street from where I live and have had my 2005 Titan SE Crew Cab & Travel Trailer scaled/certified in July 2006.
Having the Truck fully loaded with gas, equipment (in truck & trailer) and NO humans or pets on the scale, the combined gross weight is 13,300 lbs (I'm looking at the ticket as I type).

I also use a EQUALIZER hitch (best in my book....except for the Hensley Arror).
I will be adding rear Air Bags and rear Bilsteins shocks in the spring of 2007 for the reason of sway, ability to level the truck bed and firmer feel while towing our - MEALS ON WHEELS.

Remember, it's not that the TITAN can not pull the weight straight, it's the other factors while driving (wind, 18 wheel trucks passing, stopping, turns, jerks on the road while towing.....and they are plenty), that effect the short WHEEL BASE of the truck and overall handling characteristics and safety while driving in all types of conditions. I say this from trailering experience.

Such a senario as you describe may also lend itself to a situtation where an insurance carrier may refuse a portion of a claim relating to an accident. A great site to review is rv.net for all your RV needs. All the best.

Re: Towing question

I pull a 23ft Frontier and its dry weight is 5000 lb and I like to travel with my water tank full and we have a variety of so called camping equipment and end up weighing about 6500 lb’s and then add the contents of the truck and we are coming around 7500-8000 lbs (small family) . The Titan does an excellent job of pulling it and the family around, no complaints at all. But it’s not designed to do what you are asking for, it probably could in a pinch, but you are asking for problems (brakes, transmissions, etc), are going to risk your family safety because you have a wild-hair for a Titan? I love my Titan, but it’s only a truck and it can’t keep me warm at night. Best of luck on your search.

Just a little?...You do realize that the titan is a 1/2 ton truck, which means it doesn't have the payload of bigger truck?
It's really simple, your trailer will way about 6500 lbs, and if you only have 10% of that on the tongue(that's the minimum) you already have 650 lbs of payload used up, now that 800 lb golf cart brings your payload to 1450 lbs, which is right about MAX payload rating for the truck. Would you like to drive the truck also? how about taking the family with you? Well, since you're already maxed out on payload where do they go?....See what I'm saying...
