I hope you replace the ST tires on the trailer, if you have them, which are only rated for 65 mph.
Oh contra...My trailer is "special" it's factory lifted, has gas shocks and...LT tires 30" tall!
No real speed limits....

That being said, I've towed at 90 mph while kind of playing around, but not for any length of time. I'm usually in the 65-70 mph zone.

Re: Big Tow towing vs. non-big tow

Glad I found this site before purchasing my titan Saturday. After reading the info here I decided the tow package was a must. Thanks for the great info guys. I purchased an 07 SE with tow package and like it a lot.

To my surprise, it also came with the heavy duty battery (710 CCA instead of the 650). If my truck also has the trans cooler, then I theoretically have full towing capacity minus trans temp visibility.

Taking additional advice from here, I purchased an after market hitch (hidden hitch 70530) from etrailer and the wiring package (30608). My wiring package came with all 3 relays so I did not have to buy the 3rd one from the dealership. Total spent with free shipping was $190. Installed it myself without a problem. I did have to buy a couple of screws from Home Depot to mount it to the underside of the bumper though.

Thanks for all of the good info
what are you referring to here, in the bold... if you are talking about the hitch mount bolts, make sure the ones you purchased are as strong or stronger thatn the ones that come with the factory hitch....

Re: Big Tow towing vs. non-big tow

My fault for not explaining this install completely. The hitch did come with 6 high strength bolts that were used to mount it to the pre-tapped holes in the frame. The wiring kit did not come with any bolts/screws to mount it to the underside of the bumper. I had to go out and purchase #10 x 3/4 self tapping metal screws from Home Depot to attach the wiring bracket to my bumper. Sorry for the confusion.

Tip for install of the bracket - measure twice and drill once. Position your bracket in such a way that will allow clearance for the 7-way socket door to open all the way and also enough clearance behind the bracket to allow the bulky wiring connection to fit. This will take some time to measure and test before the final drilling. Take your time. I have two sets of holes in my bumper due to my lack of patience.

How hard (possible) and expensive is it to change the gear ratios in a non-big tow model Titan?

same question, cant you get the big tow rear 3rd member if you have 2wd, and dont happen to have the tow packege, i know it wont have mirrors and trans temp guage and battery, but the gear ratio is what most of us want.

If you can still get the offroad package on a 2wd then the answer is yes. Otherwise, no, you can't.

Re: Big Tow towing vs. non-big tow

I learned a few trucks back not to go without the tow package. Like one responder wrote you will always get your money back. I never heard one person ever regret it.

Re: Big Tow towing vs. non-big tow

Great Information here, thank you. Newbie question.

I will be towing 8000 pounds

I have the 2004 L without the tow package. I have upgraded the shocks, tires rims, added an aluminum finned rear diff cover with synthetic, added an aluminum finned (finned for cooling) large tranny pan that is significantly larger and offers additional fluid capacity - synthetic only in there.

I suspect I need the big tow equivalent tow gears - QUESTION: I live in southern cally (OC), where do you recommend I take the truck to do the gearing upgrade? How much should this cost? Any other recommendations on what I can do to upgrade the truck to enable the truck to safely pull that kind of weight?

Thank you all

(Sidenote - I have been told by a reliable resource that there really is no need to do the upgrades.... I was told that the tranny is over-designed by Nissan and close to bullet proof. That said, I still plan to upgrade to be safe)

Do a search on here for "hoopers" that's where you want to go on the left coast for gears.

Re: Big Tow towing vs. non-big tow

Let me do a quick check here. My impression is that if you have a "little tow" Dana 44 (2004 Titan XE) like me, you can do a straight swap in with the "big tow" ring and pinion gears... and have the dealer reflash the ECU. I'm guessing the 3.73 gears are a custom job by a place like Hoopers.

So All I get is Less MPG I get about 14-15mpg freeway with BT and 4x4
Looks like you got the OR package too, so you would have the 3.36 gears either way.

EDIT: Wow this thread is kinda old.
