Post Big Tow towing vs. non-big tow

Hi All,

We need help on this much debated topic. Do you need the big rear end with lower gears in order to get the increased towing capacity? I was told by dealer that adding transmission fan and cooler would increase our towing capacity to 9500. With that said: if towing capacity is still at 7500, what would be the recommended max dry weight in travel trailer to pull, if increase was the truth..what would be max dry weight of trailer then? We called Nissan, because we are upset..haven't gotten a straight answer yet.

So with that said...what do you people without the big tow package pull..in terms of dry weight in a travel trailer? We saw in the manual that Titans are approved for 5th wheel towing..but we aren't going there because of pin weight.

Thanks..
J

Re: Big Tow towing vs. non-big tow

I belive the non-tow Titan is rated to tow 7500lbs, the tow package Titan can go as high as 9500 lbs.
What do you plan on towing? If it's going to be a utility trailer, or motorcycle trailer, then fine, but if you want to move heavy metal, get the tow package.

Lower gears...better for the trans.
Tow mirrors...safer for towing
Factory hitch...already installed, along with tow relays.
Factory trans temp gauge...more driver info while towing

To be honest, it's a no-brainer if you're really going to tow.

Re: Big Tow towing vs. non-big tow

Yep, that is Big Tow, sometimes just called Tow Package in the literature. XE does not have ext. mirrors in 06, may have in 07, I don't know. It was called "VX35", salesman didn't know correct details.

Another advantage with the BT Gearing is the engine speed is kept higher, thus giving a bit more charging ability, braking capability, cooling, HP, etc.

Tow package sounds more mature then "Big Tow"...

Re: Big Tow towing vs. non-big tow

I have a 06 KC with Nissan installed tow bar and Leer cap. I have a 29 foot Rockwood trailer 6700 empty. I just completed our first trip from Myrtle Beach to Lake Worth Fla. and back, 1400 miles- no Big Tow and had no problems pulling with a Reese Hitch. Got between 9-11 mpg using cruise @ 60 mph. Truck had plenty of power to haul the load on I-95

Re: Big Tow towing vs. non-big tow

Does the tow package include a tranny cooler and/or oil cooler?

The trailer I am looking at is 88% of the towing capacity. Unloaded weight is 7500 and with my family "stuff" we are around 8300#.

Is the coolers something I should add soon?

All titans have the tranny cooler, engine oil cooler, and tow/haul mode. The tow package just adds a tranny temp gauge, hitch, extendable mirrors ('cept XE models), lower gearing, and HD battery. You can add the hitch, a tranny temp gauge and mirrors no problems. The difficult part would be changing the gears. With what you're towing, go with the tow package.

I hope your trailer dealer told you the weight is BEFORE options. Just about everything is an option on trailers especially toy boxes. On a toy box the double rear bunks are options, so is the generator, larger fridge, diamond plate, ect. Toy boxes are about 1200 lbs heavier then the sticker says.

I would suggest checking with your insurance company to make sure they will cover you if you truck is OVERWEIGHT according to manufacture specs. There is a good chance they will not due to the truck being misused. That would be an expensive lesson to learn the hard way.
