Install a class IV hitch, myself?

I bought an '07 without the tow package because I wanted the smaller gear...now I'd like to put a class IV hitch on it.

The dealer wants quite a bit for this job ($700) and the hitch is just under $400 on courtesyparts.com. Could I put this thing on myself? Does it bolt up or weld up?

Could I just take it to another shop and have them do it, if so...is it a big enough deal that they'll charge me $300 for labor?

Thanks!

Re: Install a class IV hitch, myself?

Yes, you can put in on yourself. I think the only diiference between the class 3 and class 4 is the WD part that goes into the receiver. It just bolts up there, have some help hold it up and put the bolts in!! Put the relays in(if required) plug in the harness!

Re: Install a class IV hitch, myself?

I found this thread which may help give you some insight. It looks like for significantly less than the Courtesyparts.com price you can get an aftermarket hitch and trailer receptacle and it appears to be a no drilling required, plug and play install. Hope the added info helps.

Adding a non-OEM trailer hitch?

Re: Install a class IV hitch, myself?

Try www.etrailers.com. They had the best pricing when I bought mine. Also, you will need to check the fuse box right behind the battery, there are two relays in there that are needed for the lights to work. I am assuming they are still not putting them on the trucks without big tow, mine didn't have them in 2004.

Re: Install a class IV hitch, myself?

The OEM hitch will bolt right on to the frame and every titan is prewired so its a very straight forward install. Just find an extra set of hands to help hold the hitch in place and you will be good to go and save ~$300 in labor.

Re: Install a class IV hitch, myself?

I paid $215.00 for my hitch from my nissan dealer. It came with the (2) fuses and 7 pin harness plug. It took about 20 minutes to bolt up. Make sure you torque down the bolts, and you should be good to go. It was very easy to do.

Best to get the factory hitch kit, come with all relays needed.

I just added an OEM hitch to my truck last weekend, and I found that it's the easiest and cheapest way to go. The Courtesy Nissan hitch seems cheaper, but the s&h kills.

Cheap aftermarket hitch- $130
3 relays (rh turn, lh turn & brake)- $96 ($32 each)
7 pin Plug - $36
=$261

OEM Hitch kit (receiver, 7 pin plug, and 2 of the 3 realys)- $229
3rd Relay- $32
=$261
and the OEM hitch comes with the mount for your plug welded on.
It took me and my buddy 15 minutes to bolt it on and torque it.

As for the class IV, that's just the class III with a weight distributing hitch instead of a normal ball mount. I picked up the Equal-i-zer on amazon.com for $419, and the shipping and tax are free. That hitch integrates WD with anti-sway in one package.

Re: Install a class IV hitch, myself?

I tried to get an OEM hitch from my dealer for my 07 and after waiting a week for them to get it in, they called me and said the hitches arent available for the 07's yet. They have a part #, but Nissan hasnt released them yet. So, they sent me to an aftermarket place and I ended up saving a lot of money. This place charged me 180 installed for the hitch, and my dealer wanted 211 for just the hitch, no labor. The guy that installed it also told me I only needed 2 relays, not 3 like the dealership wanted me to buy

What size bolts did you use to install it? I got my hitch and no bolts.

Re: Install a class IV hitch, myself?

I found the hardware. It was in the tube. I did it by myself and learned that you should have your custom exhaust done AFTER you put your hitch in! I had to cut and reweld my pipes so everything fit. Only took an hour though so not bad overall I guess.

Re: Install a class IV hitch, myself?

I bought my Hidden Hitch + wiring connectors/relays/etc for 198.xx shipped to my door. Bolted right up in 10 minutes and had it all working and the wires checked with a test light in 30 minutes.

Buying from etrailor.com was a very good experience.
