Towing question

All,

I am new to this forum but have been researching a lot of things. I have a 2005 SE with out the tow package but I do have the off road package. My understanding is that the differential on the tow package is geared lower than the standard diff. Where does the off road diff fit into this mix. I am towing a larger horse carrier this weekend that's around 9000 pounds and I don't want to overstress the truck. I have added the Nissan receiver, relays, and pig tail along with a Reese trailer brake. Thanks in advance for your reply.

Re: Towing question

The off road and towing packages both came with the lower gear ratio. So you should have the lower gear ratio.

Re: Towing question

Not only do you have the same diff gears as the Tow Package, you have the same cooling system including a factory trans cooler.
Make sure your towing in 4th gear, and on hill don't be afraid to drop down to 3rd or even 2nd if needed.

Re: Towing question

What Lou said about being in 4th and not being afraid to drop to third is critical to keep your tranny safe. Especially since you don't have the benefit of a temp gauge for it.

Re: Towing question

So you guys are proposing not to just put it in drive, turn on the tow mode and go? Should I still use the tow mode in fourth?

With a load that heavy, put it in 4th. The tow mode does not give you any mystical powers, it just puts you shift points a little higher.

If you are planning on towing this often, you might consider adding a tranny temp gauge. There are some guys on here that have done it.

At 9000 lbs. a tranny gauge is a must. Towing in 4th even with the tow mode on going up an incline will start to over heat. Tranny gauge will let you know it's time to drop it into 3rd.

Here's a couple of threads that might help you.

Installed Diff. temp gauge

tranny temp gauge

Good Luck to you!
