Sway??

I have a 07 SE KC with tow package. Its lifted approx 6.5" if that matters. I am going to be towing a 2006 Fleetwood Niagara tent trailer. Fully loaded its around 3500-4000lbs. I have towed dune buggies and jet skis but this will be my first trailer. Its not alot of weight when you compare it to some of these bigger enclosed trailers. Do you guys think I need some sort of a sway control with this or can I just load up and go? I have a 6" drop hitch so I can get it level.

Also...can anyone tell me the difference between these two WD hitches beides the price?

I will never tow a bigger load without some sort of sway control. You can pick up a friction sway bar for $99 and easily install it yourself. Being upside down in a ditch is not worth the $99 you will spend on a sway bar.

The equalizer hitch is a weight distribution (WD) and an anti-sway hitch in one. It is a good system.
The "Dual Cam High Performance Sway Control" that you reference in the second link is an add-on to a Reese WD hitch. You have to have the WD hitch in order to use the Sway Control. Followthis link and scroll down to "STRAIT-LINE WEIGHT DISTRIBUTING SQUARE BAR/TRUNNION HITCH SYSTEMS WITH DUAL CAM SWAY SYSTEM".


If the trailer really weighs 4000 lbs, then you probably don't need a WD hitch. That trailer is only 14ft long. I would be surprised if you have any sway issues. You might try posting on http://www.rv.net/forums in the "Folding Trailers" or the "Towing" sections. You will get advice from others with a similar setup.

I see. Thanks for the help. The trailer weighs 3100 dry and 3900 loaded. Its not a big trailer...just my first one so im a little inexperienced. I do have one of the sway control friction bars seen here http://www.reese-hitches.com/sway_controls.htm but my issue is when I bought the trailer my truck was stock height. I have since lifted it and now have a B&W adjustable receiver hitch ball with a 6" drop and the front little ball that mounts for the sway bar will not work with the new hitch. I was just trying to decide if I needed to spend the extra $$$ for a new hitch that will accept the little ball.

I have a 2005 KC and the 2007 Fleetwood Niagara. It does sway a little without the sway control. I agree, spend the extra $100 and get the sway bar, its well worth it. I also highly recommend the break control if you don't have one.

WD is not needed. Sway control bar will help a lot. I have a 21 foot toybox that i tow with only the anti sway bar on it (empty). When loaded I use wd. I also have air bags on the rear to level me out. 800+ lbs of tounge weight a 6 inch lift don't always go good together.

You're not going to need any WD or Sway control, just make sure you load the tongue heavy...I tow a P/U trailer all the time none of those issues!
