Anyone tow with Revo 285/70 r17s?

This site has been a huge education on so many topics...Thank you all who have taken the time to share your wisdom. After having read hundreds of towing and tire posts, I've got tons more insight into choosing replacement tires for my 04 SE BT/OR Titan.
I have a somewhat untypical towing situation that makes tire choice tricky. Going with LTs seems a wiser choice in general, given that I use the Titan to tow almost exclusively. However, most of my towing is on narrow, windy mountain roads - slowly climbing steep hills while pulling 5000 lbs - so I like the Revo for its great wet and dry traction. Unfortunately, there is no revo LT in this size, and before I decide for sure, I'd like to hear from anyone who tows using this tire - good or bad. I also wind up in some mud - not to play, but it's where I live and tow horses in winter. Inevitably, I have to deal with some mud, wet roads, and some very steep, slow-going towing. Highway driving is hardly ever an issue, although it happens occassionally.
Would sure appreciate hearing about any experiences that would help this decision.

Correct me if this line of thinking is incorrect. The way I see it, the maximum load for the Revo in this tire size is 2833 lbs. I assume this is per tire meaning maximum of 5666 lbs for the rear. With a curb weight of about 5500 lbs , assume half of the curb weight to be in the rear, or about 2750 lbs. So in theory, your maximum load in the rear would be a little over 2900 lbs.

Your maximum payload does not exceed the maximum tire load, so you should be okay. In other words, if you approached the tires maximum load, you would be over your trucks payload capacity.

LT tires will probably be a bit better for sidewall stiffness and better handling when towing, but a bit more harsh when driving unloaded.

Although I never owned a set of Revo's I don't think mud is they're thing...

I would go with a LT tire if you plan on towing more than once every couple months. The extra stability of the sidewalls of LT's will pay for themselves the first time you have an emergency situation..

Thanks for number crunching... the revo tires do have the same rating as the stock BFG rugged trails, so the should be reasonably capable (came with BT), but it certainly seems logical to get LT tires since the Titan will be towing 90% of the time it's in use. I'm pretty sure this is what I will do, but I am curious to know if anyone tows much with the P-metric revos.

I just bought 4 new tires for my 04 SE BT OR, and tow a travel trailer usually once a month during the season. I ended up buying BFG All Terrain LT285/70 R17 load range D, because I wanted an LT tire in the OEM size, and my selections were limited but I got a good deal. Anyway the difference in towing was huge. I aired up the tires to max for my last trip and it great. (ps I don't run with the tires aired to max except for towing)

I appreciate your input. Did you look at any other tire - there don't seem to be many to choose from this size. Did you consider the Firestone All Terrain Destination LT? (same load range, slightly less cost.) Good mud clean out is very important where I live, and that may be one advantage to the Destinations (according to what I've read). As soon as I pull out of the mud, I'm on a steep grade heading downhill - I really need good traction.

Yes I did look at the Firestone Destination LT in the same size, but I was only going to save about $170 out the door. We have the Firestone Destination AT's on the Wifes Jeep and are happy with them, but I don't think that they are going to clean mud any better. (also the Firestones are not as cheap as they used to be a few years ago) If you need something that cleans mud better, you might be interested in the Firestone Destination MT. Still cheaper than the BFG AT's. Just a thought.

Not to sound like a BFG salesman, but have you looked at the AT KO's. I know they are a little more expensive but, in my experience, are worth every penny. I don't do alot in mud but do have to drive in some nasy winter conditions. These tires never let me down. I put 40,000 miles on a set and they were still good when I traded the truck. I know bridgestone and firestone tires are cheaper, but maybe there is a reason for that?
