Run a jumper wire from the key on hot slot to the other 2 non hot slots, and have someone check to see if you get voltage to the pin for the running lights at the trailer connector.

so the nissan dealer won't test the relay and won't take a new relay back if that's not the problem... and they won't tell me how to test the relay... so i'm on my own.
carbeaux: if two are power... does that mean the other two are ground?
No. One is ground, the other is the power out to the trailer. Or in this case, the power out through the harness to the plug at your hitch.

there is no key on hot slot. that's what is concerning me. there is only a lights on hot slot. if the truck lights aren't turned on, even if the ignition is on, all slots are cold.

I've checked several years of Titans and all of them have the Tail light relay hot all the time, there should be 2 hots in the relay slot.
Are you sure you are looking at the correct relay?

pretty sure lou. did you look at the pic i posted? i think that's the right one. it's a 2004 so i have two brown and one blue. i'm pretty sure it's the blue that controls the running lights.
unless i wasn't checking correctly or something... the slot indicated in the pic was the only one that was ever hot... and it was only hot with the lights on regardless of key position.
i may just buy the stupid relay and hope that's the problem... unless someone can tell me if there's a fuze someplace other than in the fuze box under the hood or on the passenger side of the interior dash... because i've checked all of those.
just ticks me off that the dealer can't (won't) test the relay.
well, you need to beg the parts person to let you run outside and try it or bring your trailer in and say your not leavin till the freakin thing works cause the trailer works with other vehicles

already tried. no go. nissan dealer here doesn't play nice at all. part of lithia corp. mega-corp = no love for consumer.
Did you jump the relay as I suggested?
All my wiring diagrams say the tail light relay is constant hot in 2 out of 4 terminals, if that's wrong, jumping the relay will let you know what circut you're working on, AND if it's the relay.

Lou, I found these diagrams in another thread... On a '07 Titan the tow relay 1 is fed by fuse 32 (HOT) and 36 (switched via the lights). It also states Tow Relay 1 is under left dash..
I attached the files for you if needed.

Thanks...I actually have those files, I was bouncing around between years and missed that one relay.
My 04' has the same relay, but it suppossed to be in the regular fuse/relay block...

Yeah I lifted them from one of your other posts...

SirKeats, the others are right, there should be 2 12v sources in the relay socket. One acts as a 'trigger' that goes through the coil part of the relay to close the contacts. The other is the power source for the lights, this one should be hot all the time. The contacts on the relay close, sending 12v to the tail light circuit.
It is highly unlikely that the relay is defective, they are very simple and reliable.
I know the others are trying to help, but don't go sticking wires in there, jumping this to that. If you connect the wrong ones you could make things worse.

easy lou... i realize you're trying to help and i much appreciate it, but i don't think you read my post.
i have only ONE hot slot in my relay socket. you're telling me i should have TWO. i DO NOT have two. i posted a pic of the hot slot and everything to try and clarify what i was explaining.
i'm just trying to not screw something up worse. clearly, based on your assessment, there's a problem since i should have two hot slots and only have one (the hot one is only hot with the lights on... so the slot that's supposed to be hot with the ignition is not working).
make sense (the explanation... not the problem... lol)?
