Fifth wheel towing w/ 2008 CC

Greetings All-

First off let me apologize for starting a new thread on this topic, I know how the veteran posters will feel about that, but I haven't been able to find the information that I need, or the information that I have found is sorely out of date. I admit that I may have missed something pertinent, but I thought this to be the best way to go to get the answers I'm looking for.

There has been much talk on the subject of Fifth Wheel towing with regard to the Titan CC, but I feel that there is some information missing. For example: I am aware that Pullrite makes an automatic 12K slider hitch that slides almost 23", and I also know that it carries a hefty price tag. However, after searching their site I cannot find any information that references a Nissan Titan after '04 (except their fit chart). They state that there is a limitation on trailers over 90" for the Titan which makes no sense to me because - correct me if I'm wrong - the Titan has 38" of clearance between the cab and the rear axel. Add that to the existing 38" and you now have almost 61" which is more than enough to cover the circumference on a 96" trailer. So....

Question 1:

Is there anyone out there using the Pullrite with a CC? Do you have the clearance to make a 90 Degree turn?

Question 2:

Are you using a King Pin extender? If so, which type / manufacturer?

Question 3:

What trailer are you pulling?

Also, does anyone know of a manufacturer producing an ultra light Fifth Wheel specifically for short bed trucks? Perhaps something with a contoured front that would allow for the limited clearance?

Thanks in advance for the assistance, and please accept my apologies if these questions have been answered, I have been searching these (and other) forums for days!

Re: Fifth wheel towing w/ 2008 CC

You don't say whether you have the long bed (7') or short bed (5.5'), though you do refer to "fifth wheel for short bed trucks"... usually trucks with less than an 8' bed are considered short bed. If you have a "long bed", the following may be of interest to you:

I went in to inquire about fifth wheel hitches with the same idea as you had - that I needed a sliding hitch to allow tight turns... I was advised that most newer fifth wheel trailers come with offset pin boxes to alleviate this issue with short bed trucks, and that I would be able to use a standard hitch with no danger of contact between cab and trailer unless you do something really stupid. This is with a crew cab, long wheel base (7' bed) '08 titan. The advantages of a standard hitch over slider I was told were ease of use and mounting rails were less obtrusive (price is obvious).

Unfortunately the only mounting hardware that was available was for one of the sliding hitches due to the "new" model (the lack of aftermarket support for the Titan is more likely). I've been meaning to inquire since then to see if hitches & mounting hardware are available yet or if not, when...

If anyone has personal experience or knowledge that contradicts what I was told, let me know.

I have really been happy with my pullrite and if you do have the short bed you cannot do a 90 deg turn. With the 5er though you can get into very tight spots w/o that ability. As far as I know the mounting brackets should not be any different but you can also contact pullrite as they have great customer service. The hitch is mounted by an under bed to frame mount which has four posts that come up to attach the hitch which these come out as well leaving a flat bed w/o mounting hardware only the four one inch or so holes in bed. I do not have the king pin extender nor need it. Most new 5ers now have redesigned front caps for short bed trucks. There are numerous manufacturers such as Keystone, Heartland, and many others that produce lighter 5ers. Make sure you specifically order the capture plate as most dealers are not aware of that which is not advertised w/ the hitch. I hope this helps.
