Re: how to control surge brake?

Buddy had a boat with surge brakes and same problem. An extra wire from the backup lights needs to be connected to the trailer with the surge brakes that effectively shut the surge off when in reverse. I'm sure it must be on-line discussing the actual fix.
Good luck.

Re: how to control surge brake?

Some surge brakes have a manual valve you shut off before trying to back up, locking out brake pressure to the trailers wheels...incovient to say the least...

Others have(or you install) a "line lock" run by 12 volts that does the same thing electrically, again as posted above actuated by a reverse light wire in the trailer harness.

Re: how to control surge brake?

I was working with a Load Rite trailer one time and there was a small pin that was inserted into the tongue of the trailer to keep the brakes from engaging.

Re: how to control surge brake?

On my 25 Walkaround I have surge brakes. Do you have a 5 pin connector on your trailer? The 5th wire is for reverse and it should activate a solenoid that prevents your surge brakes from locking. If it does have the solenoid, i would check to see if it is working properly. They do go out from time to time. If not, there should be a pin that you can insert into a hole to disable the surge brakes in reverse.
