Uhaul class III or IV? Safe?

Dumb question but here goes. Uhaul can install a class III hitch for about 160 dollars without relays etc. Are Uhaul hitches safer than factory ones? I am going to be towing a jayco jayfeather sport that weighs under 4000lbs. Is a class iii safe? Thanks

For right now forget the class, what is the hitch rated at?

The factory Nissan hitch is a ClassIV rated at 500/5000 without a wd, and 1000/10000 w/ a wd hitch.

You still need a couple of relays, why not get the factory hitch kit, it comes with hitch, bolts, relays and can be bought for not too much more then the U-Haul...

Re: Uhaul class III or IV? Safe?

There really is nothing wrong with the u-hual hitch, but by the time you buy the relays needed and the adapter bracket for the 7 pin, you do not save any money. You can buy a hitch kit from the dealer, I think I paid $220 and it came with everything needed.

That is insane!!! Call another dealer, or order one from courtesyparts.com.

Is that installed? You and a buddy can install it in about 15 minutes.

Re: Uhaul class III or IV? Safe?

I had a local shop do mine, for about 150 with a 7 pin and 4/5(?) pin and the relays from Nissan were like 30 bucks...

Re: Uhaul class III or IV? Safe?

Thanks Big Al. I also came across that deal, but I am worried about the install. I'm sure i could install it but will I tighten the bolts enough?

I called Uhaul and they would not do the install unless its one of their products. They priced their hitch with the wiring, no relays, installed for 250$

What to do?

Re: Uhaul class III or IV? Safe?

Get a torque wrench, TITANSTEELER. You'll need it for future projects anyways.

Great advice for anybody who owns a tool box.

Re: Uhaul class III or IV? Safe?

I was looking on line for torque wrenches and came across 250 dollar wrenches. Do I need to spend that much, or will a 50 dollar wrench do?

Thanks everyone!

I would not buy a $250 wrench unless you are going to be using this all the time. IMO, the cheaper one will do just fine.

Hell, I didn't use a torque wrench, I just cranked the bolts down.

Sears sells torque wrenches at a reasonable price.

Here's what I use. It's on sale at Sears for $59.99.
