Re: pulling a stuck vehicle

yeah i realize that. i probably was fortunate that i was pulling on snow and ice, i couldnt get very good traction.

that is why i knew if i came here i would get good information, but i think sometimes too much info turns u into a worry wart

Re: pulling a stuck vehicle

Pulling in reverse isn't very good on your differential's, but I doubt you hurt anything in that situation. Either way, the stock towhooks suck and will break really easily as well so watch out for that. I'd get a hitch if I were you, just to be safe.

Re: pulling a stuck vehicle

definately get a hitch when you can...

also if you get that much snow up there and are really concerned about pulling people out get yourself a bumper mounted winch.

Re: pulling a stuck vehicle

Don't ever pull in reverse unless it is an emergency (life and limb type of thing). The problem is you're putting all the stress on your reverse gears in your transmission, and they're not designed for that kind of load.

The proper way is to use a tow shackle assembly in your hitch and tug, not yank them while you drive forward.

I've done this quite a few times and it usually works. Nowadays, I don't strap people out, I just use the winch.

Strapping is violent and jerky with tons of forces being applied all in an instant. Winching is slow, more easily controlled, methodical, and in my experience usually works much better.

Regards,

John

i agree except reverse is the lowest ratio which would be good for pulling..my dmax was that way, maybe the titan is not

It's not the trans that has the real issues, it's the front and rear diffs, especially the front that don't like a reverse load because the gears mesh different when running back wards.

Re: pulling a stuck vehicle

If you are worried about the tow hooks being bent, get new ones. They are cheap and just bolt in.

Re: pulling a stuck vehicle

You didnt hurt anything...If you did you would have known wuickly after unstrapping and driving off.

Like everyone else has said, you didnt bend that hook. They are forged, forged metal doesnt not bend unless its heated red hot. they will break before they do anything. NOW, it is possible to bend the bolts if they are not tightened properly.
