Im considering adding a shelf that runs the width of my enclosed trailer, it is a 6x10 and I plan on hauling my motorcycle in it for some distance and hate the idea of running it almost empty because the bike takes up the floor space. So my idea is since the bike sits low, mounting heavy duty shelf brackets (3 per side) and then bolting a 3/4" plywood across the width above the bike? So Im talking 6' wide x 3.5' long sitting right above the bike and putting plastic crates on that, tied down?
Anyone see a problem with that, or have some thoughts - Im new to trailering so take it easy.
Thanks,
Steve

Something like in the 2nd picture? I did the build out on the trailer for my son's Boy Scout Troop. I modeled it out first using a CAD application to make sure things were going to fit like I wanted them too.
You could get away with not using plywood on the walls as long as you can find the vertical metal studs and that they fall within where you plan to put your shelving. I put in plywood so that I could put in eyehook anchors all over the place so bungy cords could be secured. The plywood goes from floor to ceiling. By placing the plywood on the floor I think it takes some of the weight off of the walls. When the trailer is fully loaded for a campout (the picture is not from a normal campout - there are usually three shelves on either side) there is probably 300 lbs of gear on each side.
I used shelving materials from Home Depot. That has worked out pretty well. About once a year I have to reseat a bracket. You'll need self tapping metal screws to secure the shelf standards and/or plywood to the wall.

HRTKD - Thanks for the reply, I like the idea of shelves on each side but I was thinking one shelf that went all the way across, so kinda like what you did but no gap in the middle. I was thinking, load the bike in first and then slide the shelf over the top resting on the shelf brackets (bolted down), that way I have the same amount of floor space above the bike.
Thanks again, I may end up just going with individual shelves on each side.
Steve

The only problem I see with a shelf that goes all the way across that is removable is that the side walls of the trailer may flex and the ledge that the shelf rests on may then end up wider than the shelf. But if you anchor the shelf to the side it should be OK.

Thanks CHR - I dont really understand what your describing, do you have pics or is this something that you have seen? I ended up stacking plastic bins on the sides, Bike strapped in the middle, and then holding them in place with truck bed netting (Bungee type) I started my trip today and so far all is well.
I would be interested in more info on what you are talking about as I plan on keeping the trailer and modding it up for future trips.
Thanks,
Steve

just google "e-track". just about every trailer website sells this stuff. i have it in my trailer and it rocks! unlimited tie-down possiblities! this material comes in 5', and 10' strips. i have 3, 10' strips on the floor and 2 10' strips on each side wall and 2 5' strips on the front wall, i can tie down about a million bouncy balls if i had too!
Different trailer accessory places sell this stuff, normally in the same price ranges, they also have different accessory hooks that clip down into the e-track.
Might be worth looking into. i know im sold on it!
hope this helps!
