Re: more advice on hauling 29' travel trailer

I am asking you these questions because I don't know anything about towing but this is about a friend of mines setup that i was concerned about because I knew something here is not right. This is his comment below on this setup from his research. What do you think?
Allright...Let's do your Titan and the Hornet Trailer...

Your Titan is rated to tow about 7400 lbs(provided you have LT tires)

Your Titan has a payload rating of about 1500 lbs (remember the hitch weight of about 75-100 lbs comes right off your payload number)

Your Titan has a GVW of about 6400 lbs.

Your Titan has a Combined Gross Weight Rating(loaded truck & trailer weight) of 12,800 lbs(still need LT tires)

Your trailer has a GVWR of 7620, and a tongue weight of about 760 lbs(based on a standard of 10)

After hitching up, your truck will have about 750 lbs of payload left over.

.This is your weight envelope..

This would be the conclusion:

If you load up your truck up to its max GVW, you have about 6400 lbs of CGVW rating left over, your trailer loaded up to it's GVW(minus the tongue weight) will be about 6850 lbs, so on paper you're about 400-500 lbs over the CGVW rating...

Basically you're on the hi-end of all your rating(provided you have the correct tires)

So after all that we're right back to my OP:

Quote:
You'll be at the max....unless you plan on towing a empty trailer...
Tow in 4th gear, drop to 3rd on hills & grades...
We cool?..........

What will I need to pull it safely without hurting my truck. Also what gear do I need to pull it, obviously a hitch. (rated) ?

thanks
that doesnt sound good at all, why would you want to use your titan that close to its limits??, youll eventually hurt it

For almost every guy towing theres 2 camps...

1) My truck is rated to tow x,xxx lbs so there should be no problem doing so, and the manufacture should already have a safety factor built in.

2) Why kill my truck, so I'll tow no more then 75-80 percent of it's rating and my truck will last a little longer....

I'm not going to bag on the camp I'm not in, but IMHO I just don't believe in towing at 100% except for short tows...And I'd feel the same way if I had a 3/4 ton truck, too much trailer for that and I should be looking for a 1 ton truck...

Where things in my mind get real sticky is too much length.... A 33 ft trailer is a whole lot of tail wagging the dog for a 1/2 ton truck...

Re: more advice on hauling 29' travel trailer

were on the same page, everyone believes that since the manufacturer tell you itl tow , 10, 000lbs, that its safe to do so. maybee across town and thats it,. put those big trailers on a highway or mountain road and it can become dangerous, and also, are these people towing these big a%&trailers really set up for it, how do your brakes feel wit 8k lbs behind them?? take a look at the leaf springs sprung to their limit. 1/2 tons , no matter if thier 400 hp or not, still are not a heavy duty machine, none of them. any one who doesnt beleive me just needs to look underneath a ford f 250, or a 2500 chevy, or better yet, tow ur 30 foot trailwer with a titan and then w/ a 2500, the difference is huge.

Maybe you could reread what you wrote after having that many beers it could help?

Here is the deal. I have an F250 and an Excursion 3/4 ton and then there is my Titan. Guess what ... My Titan out tows my Excursion and is very close to the F250. I cant get everybody in the F250 so I use my Titan.

My TT is 29ft and ~ 8000 loaded.

FWIW, your "friend" is an idiot and shouldn't be talking that way to you. Let the idiot ruin his truck, it'll decide it's had enough one day. I think I've seen RobKar post that his LE is BT. You might run a search on his posts to confirm.
