Re: Increasing the Tow ability

You already have a transmission cooler, the same one as the tow package. The tow package would not be useful in towing a fifth wheel, since it would not use the receiver hitch. The other items in the package (the battery, mirrors and temperature gage) would be nice, but do not affect the towing capacity. Not sure about the 7-pin connector with a 5th wheel.

As far as gears go, I have towed with both gear ratios, and honestly could not tell the difference. The lower gears (higher numerical ratio) are not physically stronger. As the gear ratios get numerically higher, it is my understanding that the pinion gears get smaller. So the lower gears are actually weaker. Their only purpose in an off road or tow package is to increase the engine speed. Steel wheels do not make any difference.

I thought I read that the issue with fifth wheels is they can touch the cab in such a short bed. So if you bought the king cab with the 8-foot bed, then you are better off. I think there are special “hitches” for fifth wheels in Titans.

Im gonna have to call BS on 2 things, lower gears DO help. Thats the main difference between the big tow and non tow packages and the big tow is rated to tow thousands more. Steel wheels do make a different, atleast Nissan says so

Okay, I get what you guys are saying about the gears. Looking at the numbers, I concede that the gearing looks like a factor in Nissan's secret formula. Maybe the biggest factor.

Wilsond, I think you are stuck with the official 6500 lb for towing, and whatever the payload capacity is for the bed pin (2013 lb, I think). That said, my personal opinion is that there is a little voo doo in Nissan's formula for towing capacity.

As for Nissan rating the strength of their wheels, I would like to see that. I mean seriously, not just calling you out. Because I suspect the steel wheels are probably stronger. At least that is a common belief in offroad popular culture. Do you have a reference?
