totaly confused about the trailer lights

I am buying a 12 ft trailer to tow my quads ,. I have never towed anything with my titan and I am very confused about the lighting . where do I get an adapter fot the lights on the titan , it has the tow package and on the left side of the hitch there is a socket for a plug . Do I need to get something from nissan to hook the trailer lights to the titan . All that came with my 2006 titan is the brake adapter. Do I need to splioce into my tail lights ?

Please help !!!

Re: totaly confused about the trailer lights

Nope.
Depending on the plug that comes with your trailer, you can buy an adapter at Wally world for about 10 bucks.

Re: totaly confused about the trailer lights

I got one that has a 4 pin and a 5 pin adapter in one unit. Cost a few bucks more, but worth it not to have to keep track of two adapters.

Re: totaly confused about the trailer lights

If you're speaking of the under dash wiring, then I'd just go with a Tekonsha Prodigy + vehicle specific harness. If you're talking about the lighting at the back of the truck, it should all be there, as long as you don't have an '04 XE. If you're talking about the lights themselves on the trailer, can't help ya there.

Re: totaly confused about the trailer lights

Get it working yet?

Some of the replies were a bit short on information. Yes, the Titan is pre-wired at the bumper- but you'll need some trailer relays to get all the lights working.. Get an adapter at Wally World- they have one that is split into a 4 or 7 plug but you might not need both..

Next- check under the hood, next to the battery is a fuse and relay box- you'll need two turn/brake relays and if you want to put a winch or something on the trailer, you'll need a trailer power relay. Nissan web site has the part numbers.. and some drawings. The relay/fuse box cover has a legend on it.

I'm working on the same problem. Just wish I could find some OEM relays. But prices aren't too bad from Nissan Parts..

(I was out on the Armada site and they say the Armada needs another relay under the dash but I can't find anything like that on the Titan..)

Also- search this forum for "trailer wiring"- there's a lot more information to be found that you might (or not) want to read..

Re: totaly confused about the trailer lights

The truck should be prewired with a 7 blade rv type connector. This is what is included with the tow package, or at least that is what was included on mine. If you do not need electric brakes, your trailer probably has a four pin flat connector. There is an adaptor that you can buy pretty much anywhere (Autozone, O'Reilly, Wal-Mart, etc.) that will plug into the 7 blade on the truck and have a four pin flat on the other end. Since your truck has the tow package, that should be all you need. Keep in mind that there are other connections so look at the trailer you are going to buy and count how many pins are on the plug. There is a four pin, five pin, six pin, and seven blade. You can buy any adapter that you need to go from the seven blade to the rest.

I am not sure about the five pin but if the trailer has the six pin or seven blade, you need a brake contoller mounted under the dash and that will be an extra step but they are not difficult to install with the towing package. There should have been a harness with your truck when you bought it but if not you can get one from nissan for somewhere around 15 bucks. Connect the controller to the harness, mount it under the dash, and plug it in. Very simple installation if you have the factory towing package, or at least it was on my truck. I did the brake controller in maybe 15 minutes. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Re: totaly confused about the trailer lights

First off you HAVE the tow package so all you need is the 4 pin adapter. Home Depot has them for $8.

You are all ready prewired with all relays and fuses if you have the tow package. Since your trailer is only 12ft long it most likely doesn't have brakes which means the trailer plug should be a flat 4 pin connector. If it does have brakes then it will have a round 7 pin connector that will fit right into the trucks prewired 7 pin plug. You do not need a brake controler for this to work but you will not have trailer brakes. If that trailer and your quads somehow weight over 4000lbs then I sugest getting a prodigy brake controler.

Just buy the relays from U-Haul (or order online if you don't have a U-Haul local to you), way cheaper than thru Nissan, about $25 for all three. U-Haul part 13804

I agree with Carbeaux. I bought a 4 pin/5 pin adapter at Uhaul. It lets me pull my john boat without brakes or my larger boat with surge brakes without needing two adapters.

BTW, for those who don't know the difference between 4 and 5 pin connectors, the 5th pin disables the trailer brakes when you back up.

I just bought the Skull for the hitch receiver that lights up when you step on the brakes, I connected the 4 pin plug to my trucks aftermarket hitch plug and It doesent light up when I step on my brakes. My tail lights work but I cant seem to get the skull to light up. I tried checking the fuses but dont know where to look first. Please Help!!!!

Re: totaly confused about the trailer lights

Please clarify. Do you mean trailer tail lights work? And does that mean the brake and turn lights on your trailer work?

If your trailer brake and turn signals work, your fuses and relays are OK. If you only have tail lights but no brake/turn lights at your trailer, you need the relay set.

"Uhaul Part Number: 13804 is the relay kit with all 3 relays needed for this vehicle. This part retails for $24.95 and is available on-line at Uhaul.com or at a center near you." Is the reply I received from Uhaul when searching their site didn't find them. (Use keywords "Nissan Relay Kit" will find the kit on their site, I later found.) They want about 5 bucks to ship.

The relays and fuse are in a box behind your battery. You might see three empty relay slots but there WILL be a fuse in the fuse box inside. If you see the relays, the skull bling thing should be lighting up.

Re: totaly confused about the trailer lights

Walmart or any parts house will have the round to flat adapter. You can also go to Trailer hitch, hitches and bike rack (800)298-8924 if you need more direction on the wiring of these. Walmart is going to be your cheapest bet tho.
