Hardwired MP3 Player

I bought an iriver 40gig mp3 player a little while ago and have been debating how I should go about mounting it in the Titan. Up until tonight I've just had a cord run from the player to aux input and just placed the player in a cupholder. Like most people, I was not satisified with the volume differences between the CD and AUX. So I copied Deeger's plan, and bought a PIE inline amplifier for the aux input. It requires 12v, so I wired it off of the HU's "on" wire and ground it to a HU mount screw. This is the ACC wire that is violet and goes into the rear of the HU. Then I ran a RCA/mini patch cord from my MP3 player to the PIE. Then from the PIE I ran a RCA cable down to where the AUX plugs into the face plate. There I stripped the RCA cable and wired it directly to the AUX's three wires (brown is R+, black/red is L+, and black is ground/shield.) Since I have a 2wd, I used the little plate that covers the 4wd knob's socket as a mount for my player. I bought a cellular phone mount from Radio Shack that I slightly modified then used industrial velcro to attatch the player to. The cell phone mount was attached to the plastic cover with heavy duty mounting tape. A small hole was drilled through the plate to run a short mini plug patch cable through.

Results: Wow! Thanks Deeger for the good advice. This PIE amp makes the volume of the aux equal to the CD. I can still use my AUX input for other devices as it remains attatched to the face plate. No wires are visable at all and my player is safely mounted to a strong mount. The velcro is extra strong, but still allows me to easily remove the player for security or to load new songs.

To Do: I couldn't get a car charger for my player since it is pretty new and the stores are mostly out of stock. Once one is available I will hardwire up a charger.

This is a simple wiring diagram:

Here you can see the PIE installed directly underneath the HU. It's attached using the same industrial Velcro I used for the player:

This shows where I wired the RCA into the AUX input. Look at number 1 and you can see the AUX plug and wire nuts I used to wire it. Originally I used the crimp type of connectors but I wasn't getting a signal. These wires are very thin. Number 2 points to the RCA cable that runs from the AUX plug to the PIE amp. You can see the heat shrink. I also used electrical tape to cover up the connections before reinstalling everything.

Here you can see the connection to the back of the 4wd hole cover. The white stuff around the connector is silicone sealant that will dry clear. I used it to help secure the wire in place. The advantage of mounting the player here is that I can easily replace that plastic cap for resale of the truck.

This is the cell phone mount in place with the velcro. The arrow points to where I grounded the PIE amp.

Everything back together again:

Thanks Colorado. I forgot to mention that the cellular phone mount came with two types of mounts that you can interchange. One had a "loop" that you could clip things with belt clips on. I cut off the plastic loop and sanded it smooth then mounted the velcro to that one. The other mount is a clamp syle mount that allows you to clamp a phone/pda/mp3 player/etc in it. So I still have the availability of mounting almost anything on this mount if I choose so.

Nice install. The only thing I would have done differently would be to wire the dash mounted AUX jack such that it routed through the preamp as well as your MP3 player.
When trade/sell time came just leave the preamp wired in.

Du'oh. Didn't even think of doing that, but that would make a whole lot more sense. I could do it, it would just need a bit more work. Oh well, now I can't sleep well tonight, thinking of what could have been.

Slicker than a greased pig! And the A/C vent keeps the MP3 player nice and cool!

I was thinking about hard wiring my mp3 player, but I was concerned the dealer would freak in the event that Nissan ever issues a fixed head unit. (is it too much to hope for that the fixed head unit would have the Aux level corrected also?) [note correct use of "too" and "to"] So I got an external amp for the aux jack. Does that PIE amp produce any detectable hiss at low volumes? I assume the gain on the PIE amp is adjustable? Mine has a bit of hiss at very low volume.

If Nissan doesn't kick out a new head unit pretty soon, I am going to run out of patience and start working on my stereo. If the PIE amp is noiseless, I will probably copy you.

I had also noticed all that extra space under the head unit where you have the PIE amp, and I was wondering why Nissan didn't set it up to mount their XM receiver there? (I was really wondering alot about that when I was standing on my head installing it under the dash).

BTW, I grounded the switch for my heated wipers to that very same radio bracket screw!

Nice Job Sammy!
I would love to do that with mine but I don't have an AUX jack. I have the "low-grade" stereo
Is there anyway I can hardwire it in without an AUX jack?

I haven't noticed any, it sounds as good as the CD player. I'll let you know if I notice any changes after I get a full day to play around with it, but so far it sounds crystal clear.

Thanks. I just looked at the wiring schematic for the base line stereo and it doesn't show any auxiliary input. Looks like your only choice is a FM modulator. You could get a good one that actually hardwires inline on the antenna plug. I don't believe the base line stereo has the FM fade problem the mid and RF packages are facing.

W/O aux jack, I think you could connect an mp3 player via an RF modulator wired to your antenna connection.

I have to find some cashola to get one of the small amps--I already have my ipod charger wired in--the added sound boost woudl be nice. I am running out of room behind my stereo as that is where my LOC is also good job sammy

My LOC is also behind my stereo, there's room. Actually I mounted the LOC above the HU and the PIE below.

Finally got a car charger for my mp3 player yesterday. Problem: as soon as I plugged it in, the music stopped and all I got was engine noise. At first I thougt it was a bad charger, but then I tried it with the headphones and I got a perfect signal. It's been a while since I've taken a course in electricity, but my guess it's a bad ground loop caused by the PIE inline amplifier. Something else new that I noticed is that if you simply pause the mp3 player and crank the HU volume you can hear a lot of alternator noise through the speakers. I think a ground loop isolator would be the logical fix, but I don't know for sure. Anyone with more knowledge have any suggestions?

Sounds like the audio wiring between the MP3 player and the preamp is 'upside down'. By that I mean the chassis connection of the MP3 player is connected to the center pin of the RCA plug and the 'center' pin of the MP3 is connected to the ground ring of the RCA. This could be a mis-wired cable or it's just the way the MP3 is wired out.

As long as the MP3 player is working off its internal battery there is no problem since it is 'floating' relative to the preamp. However, when you use the charger the chassis of the MP3 player is tied (via the charger) to the vehicle chassis. This effectively shorts out the output of the MP3 player.

To fix: Inspect the wiring and if there is a problem correct it, otherwise you will need isolation transformers between the MP3 output and the preamp input.
