mobile video wiring question

I inherited a rats nest of wires that relate to a DVD player and three monitors. I'm not too familiar with mobile video but I am pretty wel versed in car audio. The three wires coming from each monitor have two wires, red and white. And a sheilded ground I assume. Whoever installed this system splice the three sets together. So the three video wires splice together and go to an RCA plug. Then the three power wires splice to the same power for the DVD payer, and the three sheilds/ grounds splice with the ground for the DVD player.

is this okay and I just need a signal booster or should the monitors and DVD player have separate power and grounds? ANY video knowledge shared is appreciated?

Re: mobile video wiring question

How about a model number for the monitors.

I have done a few, but they had a power, ground and video cable. Maybe the shielded wire is a video wire?

I have done them different ways. DVD player and monitors with a different power source and used a relay to power the DVD player and monitors. Not sure which is better though.

Re: mobile video wiring question

they are soundstream monitors 2 headrest and one visor. Not sure about model numbers but all thre only have one lead coming from them. Inside that lead are three wires. White is video, red is power and a shield/ ground. Can i tie the power and ground for the monitors and player together not sure why I couldnt? Also the end point of the three monitors is spliced to an rca jack with a yellow wire and a ground. Can all of these use a common ground?

Re: mobile video wiring question

Okay I got it. I wired everything (DVD player, Signal booster and monitors) to a common power and ground. Then spliced the video wire from the headsets to some RCA cables. Ran the RCA's to the signal booster and everything workds great.

I am trying to understand what you did. As I am trying to figure out what i am going to do with wiring my 2 headrest monitors to my head unit. You are saying that you used the same power source for the monitors, signal booster, and player (head unit)?

How is that signal booster working out for you? Did you trying wiring the RCA cables without it? I am a bit confused how that component is wired. The way I am seeing it, the video wires from the monitors go to the Video Out and the video wire from the Head Unit goes to Video IN? And then the red and white RCA from the monitors get wired to a split cable and then onto the head units red and white RCA connections? Do I have this right? Thanks

It's not too hard. Each brand might have different color code but it's all basically same.

The monitor itself will have power and ground.
It might have two power, one constant and one switch.
An audio/video input from your dvd player.

Your DVD player same thing. Ground, power (one constant and one IGN)
audio/video out

From your DVD player your video out will go to your monitors
You audio out will go to your head unit
I followed this link to hook my aftermarket dvd player to my OEM headunit

If you're going with an aftermarket head unit with built in dvd player disregard above link.

Thank you. as I have seen from the many manuals I have read while shopping for monitors, they either have a constant and ACC or jus ACC. I already have the Haed Unit installed so i just need to do the monitors. And I cannot install the standalone monitors because in my 2011 SV the headrests are not like the old style ones. The monitors would be pointing towards the ceiling. So I have to go with the replacement headrest/monitor combo. Or just buy old OEM headrests and install the monitor. Thanks again for the link.
