AUX Port question

I have tons of cassette tapes still. I bought a cheap cassette walkman to plug into the aux port via a wire adapter. Same one I use for my ipod. The thing is the cassette wont play via a fm tuner nor the direct wire through the aux jack. If I pull the wire out a litttle from the aux port it will work a little. otherwise if its pushed in all the way into the aux port i get nada but static. Anyone have any luck using the aux port and a cassette player?

Have you tried the cassette player through headphones? Maybe you got what you paid for. You say the jack works OK with your ipod, so it sounds like the jack is working.

Sounds as if the mini jack is not making good contact inside the cassette player. Are you sure the player is stereo and not mono?

hmm you know I think its mono. That might just be the problem. It works through the headophones. But they may be set up for mono. I never thought of that. Im not really out anything since the cassette player cost me 5 bucks at wally world. i can use it for work. Do you think a walkman stereo cassette player will work?

Sounds like all you need is a mono to stereo adapter for your cord.

If the output on the cassette player is actually mono and the patch cord you have running to your AUX port is Stereo, then all you need is something like the the following:

Adapter

On the other hand, your cassette player may be stereo and your patch cord may be mono.. which, in case, I would purchase another cord.

Hope this helps.

Is a ipod output stereo? Because that works on my aux jack better than the cd's play in the car. I just cant get the cassette to play. I am thinking I need that adapter.

Look carefully at the plug on your cable and the headset you are using on the player. If it is stereo the tip will be followed by a band of color (usually black) the next 1/8 inch or so will be silver then another band of color then more silver. If it is mono there will be a tip then a band of color then more silver all the way to the 'handle'. For stereo the connections are designated as tip, ring and sleeve (ring is the section of silver material between the two bands of color). Tip and ring are for the two stereo channels with the sleeve being the shield return.

Thanks for the help guys, I broke down and bought a sony walkman from Radio Shack and all is well now. It sounds as good at the ipod. i will eventually move all my cassette tape songs to the computer. I guess when you pay 5 bucks for a walkman you get 5 bucks worth!

Will this apply to my eight-tracks also?

8 tracks? lmao... I haven't even seen one in many years, let alone seen a player in a vehicle.

If you weren't being a smarta$$ then I suppose if you can find a portable unit, or one that you can attached under the dash.. get a patch cable and go for it. By the way, what's the shelf life on the magnetic tape holding the data for an 8track or a cassette for that matter?

Ok I don't mean to be even more of a smart ***, but you opened the door. It sounds like you already have a computer so why don't you just spend another $50 and get a CD Burner? You can transfer all of you coveted cassettes to CD and don't have to worry about shelf life. With your own burner, you can even make mixes, so you can consolidate all of you favorite songs on one CD.

Wait, Now youve opened the door. Do you actually think I will remaster my cassettes and then put them back on cassettes? Sound kinda dumb. I have a cd burner along with a dvd burner. The program to record the cassettes and remaster them and burn them on cd.
