How many of you would....

Keep your existing head unit and replace just the ugly controls and faceplate with a touch screen type of display with navigation and full internet capability?

So in a nutshell......

Keep the factory headunit in place....pull off the bezel, unhook the faceplate control cable....disconnect the HVAC and replace onto a new bezel with a 8" touch screen for all current head-unit capabilities. Then have the ability to browse the web and play mp3's etc.....?

This is project that I am looking into embarking on and just trying to see the feasability of such a add on device. What would you pay for something like this?

What is bringing this on is the lack of cool things on the market. Pioneer Kenwood and a few others are close but they are all missing at least one little thing that makes over $1000.00 investment kind of a waste of time and money....

Your thoughts......

how are you going to get the stock deck to play dvds and browse the internet? or does that functionality come from the "new faceplate unit

sounds like a good idea though

The faceplate would be an SBC (single board full blown computer) with a touch screen. It would run Windows Mobile and would do anything that windows can do. The DVD can be interfaced several different ways.

The interface would talk to the headunit via whatever protocal it does now...I am awaiting some information on the protocol. This will be interesting if they share anything. Without some engineering documention from the mfg this will be impossible.

I write software so the front end will be easy......the hardware is pretty available so all I really need is the communication protocol from the face plate to the headunit...

Yeah margin will be good to because you dont need a p4 running 3 ghz to run IE, play DVDs, and mp3s. Good luck.
