I have read the threads posted by llajumpvid and Yankee4x4, and would have to agree with all parties. Those are some truly awesome systems they made. I asked them both questions and got great answers back. I have come to the conclusion that what is there, is a bit more high tech than I would need. I have a Audiovox ADV12, a 12" monitor with a built in DVD player. Here is the item number from ebay. # 5784213974. It has a coax input to which I can add any source of video through. If I buy a little 25 dollar converter from Walmart. I have a big DVD library, and would like to know the best source to store it and payback through this LCD. Thank you for your input, and I will answer any questions I can.

Hey Bhudda,
I don't quite understand. Can you clarify this?
Yankee4x4
The best source for a vehicle or TV would be a modified xbox, throw a 300gb drive in there, copy all your MP3s, dvds, and xbox games to it and play them off the hard drive. Plus you have a dvdrom in case you rent or buy a dvd on a road trip to watch. It fits great underneath a seat. I have mine under my pass seat.
Baseballfanz
Here are some pictures I found of the display. The DVD loads in the top. The unit has a kick stand for table top use. You might be able to make out the coax jack on the back. I have been looking into the laptop idea. I still have to figure out which software to use to rip the DVD's. There would be a bunch of power usage to run all these elctronics however. Laptop, Audiovox monitor, Kenwood stereo.

I would like to rip, to a player of some sort, my DVD collection. I know that you can do this on a laptop, or put in a carputer. I just would rather have something I can move to one of three vehicles with no major hassles. We take different vehicles depending on the trip length and crew size.
Thanks for the ideas so far guys.

I use dvdshrink 3.2 to rip my dvds to the harddrive that way i can adjust the compression and select exactly what i want from each movie; whether i only want the movie or the whole shebang off the disk to include extras previews and extra languages. I have a 160gb in the SHIFT_pc and 10gb is all mp3s; software (the os, frontend, various media players, gps software) is another 5gb leaving anough space to put about 30 dvds shrunk down to 4gb each.
btw i don't use the SHIFT_pc to rip the dvds since it would be painfully slow on the 933mhz P3. I rip them on my 3.2ghz p4 to a portable hard drive and transfer them to the SHIFT_pc. My desktop does the process in about 1/5 of the time taking about 40mins to rip a complete dvd including all extras and compressing it to 4gb from 6+ gb
I figure i could pick up a experienced x-box at most pawnshops. Is there a specific hard drive I need to search for? I did a 300GB hard drive search on google and mainly saw seagate. Anything else I should know about doing it this way? Like how to rip the movies to it?
Thanks again, you are making this easier than I thought.

I have the PS2, couldn't I also do it with this? I have the games for this already, and it would make it a whole lot easier to slip past the boss.

You can't use a ps2 for this (well actually I think you can but its a pain)
Xbox- get an xbox manufactured oct 2004 or earlier, any IDE hard drive (not serial ATA). The reason you get one 2004 or earlier is because you don't have to get a chip to hack them. Really any xbox will do but <2004 require least effort.
go to www.xbox-scene.com to learn the amazing things you can do with an xbox.
I currently use mine for nearly all my media. If you wanted you could wire a PAC SWI-x to it and use your steering wheels for controling it! I have 100gb of mp3s, about 15 xbox games, a couple of movies, and an boatload of music videos on it. The xbox media center works great in a car. very easy to read and very easy to navigate. I use a wireless logitech controller to control the unit but there are many options you can do for that.
If you were closer (I am in MN) I would be more than willing to hack yours for you. Its very easy but you do need some things to do it (memory card, specific game, and soldering iron).
I should also say that you can use any size hard drive. The bigger the better though, movies are about 5gb on average, games are ~3gb, and mp3s are well you know.
I currently have a 200gb in my truck, in my last car I had a 120gb.
I would assume that while hunting the pre-Oct. 2004 xbox down, I would find some sort of date ranging label on the bottom? Using whichever size IDE hard drive I find appropriate, do I need to do anything special to install it and start ripping movies to it? I read som hairy stuff on that xbox-scene place. They made it sound as fun as re-working the PS2 to work. Not real crazy about soldering inside a tiny little box that I just snuck in the garage.

Really
Just an aside question, where do you get the music videos to burn?
