imo, it all boils down to what music you listen to...cause all speakers dont sound the same.
You need to listen to what you are going to buy with the type of music you like, otherwise you are just throwing money out of your account on a hope and a whim. can your ears tell the difference between a $5000 system vs $1000.
mine can, but mainly at 125 db's and up....under 120 db's, it gets a lot harder to tell the difference between cheap and expensive...boils down to the install and acoustics of your vehicle.
It isnt maxed out, my max on the deck is 35, i max it out at 28. IM running the speakers on an Orion amp, 600watts I believe and it is an A/B amp. Certain songs I dont hear it, I dont see any reason why they would have any distortion. Im starting to think it might just be with certain types of music, how some songs have that as a background effect.
Looking at the power ratings, if anything you may have a little distrotion at high volumes with underpowering them a bit... Best thing to do is set your gains up using a DMM since most people don't have a scope, this will give you a little breathing room.. Play a bunch of different CD's (high quality) and see if problem is isolated to the mp3 disk or if it happens on regular cd's...This way you know for sure...

yea run a 1000hz test tone when you use the DMM to set your gains, I heard some songs actualy have clipping on the CD itself and its more common with MP3s sice they can clip the signal due to compression.
Did you put foam behind the midbass to break up the sound waves?

I didnt do the install myself. So I am unsure if they put foam behing the midbass. What is a DMM, Im not too experienced with speaker install and such. The guy I went to is real good and does work on a lot of high end vehicles so Id assume he did if that is the norm. Thanks - Chris

I would check it anyways, I went to a shop that does work on expensive vehicles and they had my amp set for LP instead of HP for my comps, after replacing the speakers 3 times because they had set the gains wrong and telling me not to touch it. Hell the first time I blew my old comps was because they gave me a low pass only amp.
DMM = Digital Multi Meter. you need to read a gain setting tutorial, your amp could be clipping at that volume volume.

First off Ill try it with a regular CD and see if it is fine. Im thinking its probably the mp3 CD. Its all under warranty so if they blow they blow. Do you have any advice as far as setting the frequencies for the mids and the trebble? Also on my deck there are a bunch of things that can be tweaked. Any other advice on things I should check? Man I am amazed by you and Lizard, you guys know your sh*t. Later - Chris
Depending on your system is where you can set you gains.. Mine for example, Low Pass Filter is set at 70hz @24db and the High Pass Filter is set at 80hz @ 24db. Your midbass and low end bass should work together and having that blend is vital. I'm able to set my HPF so low because of the speakers I'm using can handle it. Having gaps in frequencies is also okay because roll off and cabin gain will fill in any gaps.. My suggestion as a start is keep your HPF at 100-120hz and set the LPF at around 80hz and see how that sounds. Decide if your going to use either your headunit's crossover or your amps crossover. Most people use the headunit's crossover for ease of adjustments on the fly. I happen to use both to give me a deeper slope but it's not necessary.

They tuned the amp to what volume on your HU? Did they use test tones? Hell if they set your gains wrong you could clip at less than 1/2 volume.
For example your if your amp has a sensitivity up to 2V and the gains on your HU put out up to 8V and you have the gain set to .5V then every time your HU sends over .5V to the HU it will send a clipped signal. My amp is like this, my HU is 5V and my amp is 2V, lucky for me the volume on the eclipse is NOT linear so at 3/4rd volume a test tone still sends less than 2V to the Amp so I set my gains for this volume level. The last few clicks on my HU really boost the Pre-out voltage by a Huge number, so I just don't turn the volume up all the way.
With my Sub At vull Output on my HU, I cannot even set the gain on m other amp (2V max on that one too) It always clips even with the gain down all the way, so instead I set the sub output to a reasonable level 2/3 of max with HU at 3/4 volume and set the gains there, since I know most of the time normal music will not put out as much voltage as a test tone. This gives me enough flexability.
Honestly I'm learning alot really fast, Im no expert This will be my first system total done by me. I have had a system in teh past but it was much cheaper parts, I installed 1/2 of it and configured it by ear
