NEW DVD/ NAV.... sorta

Ok well heres what happened, I finally did my version the carputer...I got a 7 in touch screen from ebay $ 179, a garmin usb nav antenna with software from ebay $100..I mounted my laptop in the console(mind you i know nothing about this stuff) hid a few wires, I put the monitor at an angle right in front of the console, hooked the audio out to the aux jack, and "boom!" instant carputer..laptop has a dvd and a 20 gig hd for mp3s, and I'll tell ya for all the negative stuff I hear about the RF system, mine sounds awesome. I just watched " BATMAN RETURNS " in the truck and it was like my home system( witha tiny screen).....will post pics soon

Thats really cool. I always thought it would be cool to have some kind of "docking bay" that you could plug a laptop into in a car and have it run through the sound system and have an extra screen like that. You should get the nav bezel from Nissan and mount your screen in it, that would be really cool. Then hardwire the inputs instead of using the aux jack.

wait till you hear a REAL system lol. Do you have your lappy wired to turn on and off with the truck? How do you have the 6 disc changer AND the carputer in the same spot?

PICS?

you could use one of these for that - one USB cable plus you'd want an air/auto charger, and then hardwire and hide everything else. The downside being it looks like they don't guarantee OSX support. And although it says 2kSP4, I'd only use it on an XP machine. Seems a tad gimicky but properly done would make for a clean install The other option on docks would be the actual dock which goes with the laptop (if one exists), but geez those buggers get expensive. $150's not cheap but better than OEM docks.

you have to do a search in here for the part numbers, but you can get a Nav bezel from Nissan and mount the monitor there. I have toyed with this idea off and on for about six months now. This is b far the simplest solution yet. I willingly admit I am computer illiterate, and have put it off mainly due to having o build a computer. I think you may have helped solve this issue. I just got the GPS solution through Streets and Trips, and it works great. I know it doesn't have the voice directions, but I prefer more accurate mapping to a woman telling me to turn into the lake. I am trying to figure out how to get multiple video playback, and am about to get schooled over at mp3car. I will pass on the details after the flames go out. Looks great by the way. Best of luck.

I am working on my carputer, and had pretty much decided on the PIMP TIGHT wallpaper, but now maybe I think I will go with the KISS. . . . what to do. . . .
