engin whine

I put 2 speakers in the dash of an old toyota and now I have a whine in the speakers that goes up and down with the engine rpm. Any suggestions?

The thing is I didn't notice it until I installed the speakers. I wonder if it's some kind of grounding problem.

You need to separate the power and the grounding wire (I think) by atleast 12 inches. Run 1 on the side by your door and 1 by your center consel and it should take the whine away. The wine is from having 2 wires too close to each other, pretty sure the power/ground but not 100%. Worst comes to worst just look what wires you have bunched together try seperate them and see if it works.

Perhaps the new speakers have a better frequency response, allowing you to hear something that was probably there before you installed the speakers.

Is the HU aftermarket? If so, check the HU ground. Avoid the ground used by the stock unit as this is usually grounded to the dash. Attach a ground to the floorboard as short as possible, and use a heavier gauge.

Another thing to avoid is running power and low level signal wires down the same conduit. Keep them as far apart as possible.

Ground loops can be a real PITA. Good luck!

Do you have an amp installed?

I have never seen a stereo that did that without the use of an aftermarket amp.

Yes I do have an amp. I can move the amp around and the sound changes somewhat. I'm going to try some of the suggestions from this post. Thanks everyone.

Its either your ground or your RCA wires.

unhook the RCA wires from the amp and turn your stereo and engine, see if you have the noise.

If the noise is still there then you have grounding issues
If the noise is gone and reappears w/you connect teh RCA wires then you are introducting noise by the RCA wires, Upgrading your RCA wires may reduce the noice (May) but the best thing to do is rerun them further away from whatever it is introducing the noise, like the power wire (always keep the RCAs on one side of the vehicle and power on the other) or a power inverter if your using one, or any other electronic device.

I ran the speakers without the amp and no more whining. Must have something to do with the amp (tried using different RCA and tried moving ground to other side of car no go). I wonder if the power wire powering the amp is the culprit it's about 10 years old? lots of hot and cold cycles in the engine bay.
