What options should I get on my Titan?

Hi I've searched around for this info but haven't been able to quite find what I need, sorry if this is a rehash.

I'm seriously thinking about trading in my 2003 Hummer H2 for 2006 titan LE. No matter what I am going to add a CarPC to do internet, mp3s, etc. I have to have NAV either via the Nissan option, or via the CarPC. The question I have is what is the best way to go with the Titan to get what I want, i.e which options should I get to get the best starting point for my CarPC addition?

Should I get Titan with the Nav or without?

If I don't get the NAV I could simply replace the headunit with a touch screen. But then I don't know if I can use the stock amps and speakers and am reluctant to start a chain reaction stereo replacement. Plus I don't think I'd be able to match all the integrated features with an aftermarket system so probably the best way to go is somehow use the stock system with the Nav.

The first thing I need to know is what additional inputs are available with the Titan's Nav system? Audio? (I know about the aux input on the dash, but is there a better one for higher quality input?) Video?

The trouble with adding to the Titan Nav system (sharing the screen I mean) is I'll have to somehow switch back and forth between it and my PC, which kinda sucks. But if I had to choose between that and the integrated features of the Titan's system, I'd probably rather have integrated features. I think.

The other option is to have the touch screen in addition to the nav screen, I'm just not sure where I'd put it. If it's just displaying "now playing" info and player controls, I could concievable use a pretty small display device. But that would be sub optimal for other uses, like surfing the web.

Gah, not sure what to do. Any experts on the Titan system want to chime in with your opinion? I'd surely appreciate it.

thanks,
Mike

First, do you know if your doing XE, SE or LE? The rockford package would change things slightly.

If you know your going to do carPC, and you know your going to like it, and you know your going to go all out and do it right, then do NOT get the nav. Waste of money.

assuming you get the rockford, and all you wanted was to add the carpc, then I would get the nav bezel, a 7" touch screen for it, and run the audio out from the pc into the aux jack in the rockford, that way you would still have a front load cd player. DVDs however you would have to be creative in mounting them.

That would be my "minimum" way to do it.

Next step would be to eliminate the rockford (or don't get rockford to begin with) replace with a good quality audio deck, then get a DVD rom drive that is single DIN mountable (USB) that way you would have front loading DVDs (for movies)

If you want a sweet A/V system buy the truck without Navigation and install your carputer. You will be limited to the versatility of the OEM screen and the modules to allow 1 or 2 video inputs are pricey. You could get the rear-drop down if that interests you, I don't believe you have to have Navigation to get it.

What Vyrus said.

If you have OEM NAV, you can buy a video switcher from www.avelectronic.com for $550.00 to add a carputer & camera(s). For that, you can probably buy an aftermarket touch screen + the OEM NAV bezel, or you could put that toward an aftermarket head unit with display.

Another reason not to buy OEM NAV and/or DVD is that it marries you to the RF headunit.

If you are doing a carputer, you don't need OEM NAV.

I'd get the LE truck, btw. Thanks everyone for your reply. If I get the Rockford, can I just swap in a different head unit? Can I use all the amps and speakers from the Rockford system? How much does the OEM nav unit bezel thingy cost?
thanks very much!! :-)

With the LE you are forced into the rockford. Yes you can keep the rockford system completely intact and run your carputer thru the aux jack, then later if you wish you could upgrade the RF system. When upgrading the RF system, its all or nothing (HU and speakers at the same time) pretty much.

You should go on Nissan's main website and build a truck to your wants/desires. There you will see what options that you will have to get to get something you want. For example.....if you want the side airbags you got to get every available option on the LE. Go check it out, it will probably answer your main question.

Now if I were you, and if you don't want side airbags, I would get an SE and replace the navigation and Rockford Fosgate crap stereo. You can do much better with a aftermarket system. You can put on stepbars of your choice.....will have a lot more money to work with (if that is an issue for you). Not knowing what you desires/abilities are makes it difficult to make a good recommendation.
