Question on Power Distribution

I'm upgrading the RF system (actually ripping it out). I have my 250 watt JL Audio sub system which I will be re-incorporating, and a new 4 channel Memphis amp 50 x 4 rms (under-rated). It will be complimented by MClass 6.5 comps up front and coaxials in rear.

The JL class D mono amp calls for a 30 amp fuse (which is what I'm using at the battery presently through an 8 ga. wire) while the new Mem is 40 amp, (2- 20s) so I figured an 80 amp AGU fuse at the battery would suffice, with a 4 ga. wire from battery to distribution block (about 12 to 15 ft.), then 8 ga. to each amp.

My question is: is it necessary to use a fused distribution block, or just a standard power dist. block? (considering the fuse at the battery)

I'm going to be under 500 watts total so I figure I don't need a cap or bigger battery or anything like that.

Re: Question on Power Distribution

The point of a fused block is to protect the smaller gage wire from the block to the amps.

Max recommended fuse for 4 gage is 150 amps.

Max recommended fuse for 8 gage is 100 amps.

Since a short in the 8 gage would blow the 80 amp fuse at the battery before exceeding the max current capacity of the 8 gage, you probably don't need a fused block.

Re: Question on Power Distribution

Thanks, thats good because I just received all my wiring, and the dist. block is built really well, but it's not fused.
