External Radar Detector Installation

I recently purchased a new radar detector on a recent trip outside of my state (VA) and would like to install it in the front grill. I need to figure out how to waterproof it! I purchased the hard wire kit and it comes with a power and alert light. The unit also has voice. What I would like to do is tap the audio out into my car audio. Is this possible? So whatever I am listening to, the voice alerts would merge with the radio signal. I might like to put a switch to mute it.

Re: External Radar Detector Installation

If it's made to be mount outside the car it should be waterproof already. I'm sure you can intergrate the voice into audio system, look into how some have done their bluetooth, should work the same. BTW what's the brand of your radar detector you got? Thanks

Hey...I got the Beltronics Vector 955. Not entry level, but not too expensive. BTW...it's probably not made for the external mount.

WallyWorld has a $39.97 detector that far exceeds the protection of any other brand.....and Silver Titans are invisible to Radar....

Re: External Radar Detector Installation

Bluetooth wouldn't work with the stock stereo system. Would I need to install a bluetooth speaker that can receive the audio signal? I would prefer to tap into the normal radio signal no matter what channel I am on. Perhaps I can tap into one of the speaker on the dash or door.

Re: External Radar Detector Installation

I'm no expert, but I do a some pro audio and industrial electronics. I would be careful of tapping into the speaker directly, the regular amp (Titans use a 2 ohm system) would possibly send power back fed to the detector audio amp section. Damage may occur, ask around before doing this.

Re: External Radar Detector Installation

Ok...followup...I purchased a cheap radio shack external speaker that I am going to mount under my dash. Now, the only thing to figure out is how to waterproof the unit. Since I plan to mount it up front behind the grill, I will need to be black and hidden. I will probably just build something and paint it black with a clear plexy glass front so the signals can get through. I may experiment with the plasti-kote product. If you have any ideas for the waterproof box, let me know.

Ha.I have the same one, and you are so correct about the "Invisibility Cloak" on the Radiant Silver ones. Plus they are the fastest color.

back on topic. I am not sure if you bought it for the cool factor or not, but none of them work without a car in front of you for "Bear-Bait"

Good luck figuring it out. i have never seen one so I hve no idea how to help.

Sorry
