Alternator replacement - Goin' Bigger

Anyone have any experience in replacing the factory alternator with something after market? I have a large stereo system and some external lighting (fog lamps) and have a problem with the lighting dimming when ever the bass hits. Question is, if I add a larger alternator (roughly 200amp), will any other modifications need to be made to either the electrical system or possibly the computer???

Re: Alternator replacement - Goin' Bigger

Try updating your grounds first. The active tuning one is good for the price.

There are a few that have upgraded the alternator but not many.

If you do decide to go bigger, I believe Iraggi is about your only choice. I think you can go to a 200 amp through them. Check eBay to find one.

Re: Alternator replacement - Goin' Bigger

Iraggi, from what I am seeing is getting hit or miss reviews. Do you know of anyone else. I have been searching on-line and am seeing a couple places refer to "Mean Green" alternators...Anyone got anything on them...I just hate spending massive amts of green to have a killer stereo and only to be brought down by a $300 alternator...

I don't know of another, but that certainly doesn't mean it doesn't exist. One of the guys like James (tech12volt) might know for sure, since he does a lot of high power stereo stuff for a living. Send him a PM.

Here is the active tuning kit.
http://www.activetuning.com/products...04GRNDKT-TNAR/

I run a lot of power between my 2 amps and I've never had a problem running the stock battery and alternator. Try this kit first before you do the alternator.

Re: Alternator replacement - Goin' Bigger

You will need to upgrade the size of your wires (ground & power) and use a bigger fuse with a bigger alternator.

IMHO, the way to find out if you need a bigger alternator is with a DC clamp meter. If the stereo is pulling more juice than the stock alternator puts out (after powering the truck itself) then you will be constantly discharging the battery (particularly at low RPMs). If you have somebody increase the engine RPM while you watch the clamp meter, you can determine your break even RPM. You will find that the stock alternator has very little reserve at idle.

Re: Alternator replacement - Goin' Bigger

What do you recommend? I know that I have a large stereo sys and external lighting. When running vehicle at night, the lights dim when the bass hits. This is the second battery (Optima yellow top). Doing same thing. If I do not play stereo, no dimming of lights...If i do upgrade, what do you suggest o' electrical guru....

Not sure if Mean Green has applications reguarding the Titan, but I have one in my '75 IH Scout II. It has been worked very well....been under water more than once! You will pay for it as they are not cheap. FYI they also make a mean starter...no pun intended! I've actually used the starter to pull me up a hill when the carb decides to no longer feed fuel to the engine.

Re: Alternator replacement - Goin' Bigger

Oh, no doubt bro, I ordered one of those too from ActiveTuning. I am only home for a short time. I work/live in Iraq, so I am only home 2 weeks before having to leave again. I am getting the ALT, upgraded wiring, and all installed the first day i am home...

Re: Alternator replacement - Goin' Bigger

If you are buying an alternator, clarify whether it comes with a pulley (with the correct number of grooves) or uses the stock pulley.
