What is a "TPMS Valve Service Kit?"

I know it is the tire pressure monitoring system. Why do the tire people want to charge me $4.00/wheel for them? I just seen it on the estimate and have not had a chance to ask the tire people yet. Does anyone know what these are? Are they necessary or just more $$ to the tire store?

Usually, it's new O-ring seals for the stems... I know they need to be replaced once in a while...

Yeah its the O rings they replace, or should replace. I believe Discount tire changes the O rings and the aluminum sleeve as well.

Yeah, typically its a new seal, as mentioned above. I would just pay the $4 and have them changed for piece of mind. Also, if your sensors are going in different wheels, the wheels may be shaped differently than the wheels they were in so the original o-ring may not seal right.

Re: What is a "TPMS Valve Service Kit?"

NISSAN requires a New Seal and a New Nut as well. They are not reusable according to NISSAN. I keep 2 sets of Seals/Nuts and a spare TPMS in my truck all the time.

They are pretty inexpensive. If $4 covers both items per wheel, that is not bad. The Mechanics really would rather use regular Valve Stems, as the TPMS is so easy to break.

UPDATE -from my Federated Catalog:

Schrader/Bridgeport TPMS Service Packs include Cap, Core, Nut, Grommet.

Re: What is a "TPMS Valve Service Kit?"

I would do it for $4. If the seal goes bad it can create a very slow leak that is difficult to detect.

I believe Discount charges about $7 per wheel for new o rings and sleeve.

Re: What is a "TPMS Valve Service Kit?"

its one of those things that is not necessay but good for piece of mind. the TPMS sensors have rubber grommets at the base and on the nut that screws on the outside. they also use a better grade valve core that has a rubber grommet as well. the tpms rebuilds we use replace every part but the sensor itsself and also gives you a new valve cap. rubber of course breaks down over time and can lead to a leaking sensor so it is not a bad idea to do the rebuild and prevent this from happening. If it is an 09 or 08 model then the rings are most likely ok but if it is a few years old then I would definitely recommend it.
