Be carefull with your impact wrench....

When I installed the new rotors and brake pads on my titan I used my air impact wrench when removing/replacing the wheels. This afternoon I did oil/filter change on the camry and then started tire rotation on the truck."5" of the lug nuts would not come off with the impact wrench.I then used a 4 way.I broke 5 wheel studs off.I'd over tightened them I reckon when putting the wheels back on after I'd done the brake job.I ordered 24 new wheel studs and will replace them all when the new ones arrive. From now on I will use my torque wrench to finish the tightening.Live and learn!Sometimes I make a lot of extra needless work for myself.

Re: Be carefull with your impact wrench....

The problem lies with Nissan, they spec'd the truck with only 12 mm studs, WAY too small for a full size modern truck...They should have been 14mm...

BTW The 12 mm studs only get torqued to about 75-80 lb/ft MAX...

Re: Be carefull with your impact wrench....

I torque my wheels to 90 ftlbs and never have had any problems. I use the torque gun on the second to lowest setting to snug the lugs then drop the truck to torque the lugs. Thats on a Matco torque gun. It will all depend on the brand and model of your torque gun. Also it will depend on how you use your torque gun. I've seen people sit there and repeatedly pull the trigger even after the its reached its torque setting. Thats a no no.

Also on pneumaic guns PSI is a factor as well...

Re: Be carefull with your impact wrench....

Fer tightening, I just use the air/electric impact to save me a bunch of spinning then finish off with the torque wrench. Learned that a bit ago when learning about autox/road racing and what over tight lugs can do - above and beyond what happened to the OP.

Surprised you didn't warp your rotors using that impact.

Talking about a motorhome?....

i also use a impact, but like others just run them up and torque with a wrench...If the Titan had bigger studs I'd worry less, but.....

I have a real cool light-weight Mac composite gun that's basicly a hi-power 3/8" gun with a 1/2" drive anvil. It's very quiet, uses very little air and is plenty strong for any lugnuts. It stays in the truck to get used with my PowerTank CO2 set-up...

Where did you read that at? Mine as well as all the ones I has seen are 140 lbs per SI and dealer/owners manual specs.

I worked at a Big O for a year and a half. I could be remembering wrong though. 140 is a lot for a half ton truck.
