Re: Brake service on 2005 Titan - do it myself?

Yeah, if those sleeves are made of high grade stuff, it could be brutal getting them off w/o the key. I would get them, but I would be sure to loose the key by the first time I had a flat. Those are the first wheel locks I have seen that look like they would actually work.

You can easily order a second key for $10 to keep at the house.

Gorilla Automotive Products - Lug Nuts, Wheel Locks, Auto Security, Wheel Accessories

If I had aftermarket wheels on, I would have 2 sets keyed the same so each wheel would have 2 locks on it and a spare key at the house.

They come with a sticker that you attach somwewhere in your truck (inside glove box, center console, floorboard under carpet, etc...) so you'll always have their address and your key number with you.

Re: Brake service on 2005 Titan - do it myself?

Took my Titan to the dealer to have them remove the #@!$#@! wheel lock on rear passenger wheel. Had them replace the locks on other wheels with standard lug nuts, too.

While they were at it, the replace my A/C fan free of charge - there was apparently a recall.

Technician is telling me that the rear pads and rotors look fine. Apparently there is "plenty of wear left on them". He wants me to do a "brake diagnostic" for $96. Says I should return the aftermarket rear pads and rotors (which I haven't yet been able to install due to the wheel lock issue earlier). As expected, he went on to try and scare me about using aftermarket parts.

I will say that after replacing the FRONT pads last night, the BRAKE and SLIP lights no longer come on. Also, I've noticed an increase in braking performance. The front pads were NOT worn down to the wear indicator, but replacing them definitely helping with braking performance nonetheless. Could there possibly be something else wrong with the braking system, or would I just be wasting $96?

I'm not sure what to do at this point. I don't have lots of extra money to spend.

Re: Brake service on 2005 Titan - do it myself?

My Rear brakes are barely worn at 64k miles with the pads still over 3/4 as thick as the new ones and plenty more space before the squealer bars, so I put them back on and left them alone.

The rear brakes don't do much braking and will typically last at least 2x the fronts. Save the $96 for buying caliper pistons and seals when you need them.

Pops and bestatchess: Thanks. Doing well with the new front brakes now.
