Buying tires online. I understand they can ship to your door, but how do you get them on the truck? When I looked into this before, by the time the tire shop mounted YOUR tires that came online, it actually cost a little more than if you had bought from the shop.
How does buying online save money? Am I not looking at this right?

From what I've been able to tell, TireRack for example, has a pre-arrangement with local shops in the area to put the tires on. The call it "Recommended installers". In fact, you can have them dropped shipped to the shop instead of your home. I can't speak for the many others out there.
I just did a comparison on a set of BFG Long Trail T/A Tour, and the TireRack online deal saved me about $70 bucks vs buying from the local tire shop OTD. Honestly, for $70 bucks on the exact same tire, I would rather support my local business.

In most cases you do not save alot or anything at all unless you can catch a great sale as I did on some Michelins. Even after paying for installation I saved about $125.00 vs buying local. No one local would match or even come close to what I paid online.

I've bought tires online but got free shipping. (If one tire place online will promote free shipping, then call anyone else and they might match). Then I have them shipped to my door and have the "mom and pop" shop down the road put them on and balance for $15 a tire. I am currently looking for tires, but without free shipping or any specials, I figure I will only save $50-$75 total. For that, I will support the local shop this time.
I think the best place to buy tires is tirecrawler.com. I ordered a set of tires on Monday the 13th and they are getting delivered today the 15th. They are BFG A/T's in the new 275/70-18 size they were 169 bucks a tire, I looked at local places around here and every place was backordered and the best price I could get was 212 bucks and up.

my mechanic mounts and balances them for me for cheap money. also alot of tire places don't have the tires i'm interested in, the only one local to me that does is town fair and they are real expensive. unless you want, cooper, bfg, continetal, general then you need to hit up the online.

what i did is look for a site that had online coupons*found by using google* and throw all the coupons in at checkout. i then informed discount tire of the price they had given me and it was matched. i had found some tires for 1066 delivered and discount said they would match it*i think i got a 300 dollar or more discount*

I bought mine from Discount Tire Direct, I used to manage a Big O Tires here and even at employee cost they couldn't even remotely come close to the price. I ordered my wheels and tires separate off the web and paid $1,600 vs. Employee cost at Big O of $2,110. That to me is a no brainer, if it were $100 difference total I may have bought local but over $500 is a ton of savings.

I did the same. Tire rack had my 305/35/24 Khumos on sale for $200 each. I went into discount and they were able to match the price.
I also recently had one replaced and DT prorated the tire based on the price I paid so I got a new one for $125.
