Brake Problems

For those with the brake "judder" the link below covers in great detail the design and function of brakes. I went through this on a Dodge Dakota and the info was helpful. A lot of the problems resulting in brake judder and the reason it seems to happen on so many more vehicles today is related to the quality of metals in the rotors and the environmentally friendly binders used in the pads. The root of the warpage problem is not just heat but also the pad. It starts as a change in the chemistry of the rotor known as glazing. The TSB calling for turning the rotors is far from a fix since enough material can not be machined away to remove the effected zone of the metal and still have enough rotor thickness to meet caliper stroke. The new pads are probably the best news. My guess is they modified the binders and changed the heat treat of the material. The TSB also addresses this with the burnishing. Once upon a time all brakes needed to go thru this break in or burnishing but today, the pads are baked when made. The burnishing has nothing to do with the rotors. It is a heat treatment for the pads to better burn off the binders. In short, Nissan needs to get a better brake design partner. My vote would be Brembo.
