16" Chevy wheels fit the rear

While I was at the dragstrip tonight with the Chevy guys, I borrowed a spare tire to see if it fit. The stock Chevy steel spare rim (16") just barely fits the rear. There is maybe 4-5mm of space between it and the brake caliper.

I'm looking to get a smaller and lighter wheel than what's on there now (I have the 18" wheels). Just thought you all would want to know.

that would be a good rim to mount a DR on.

Not all of them fit, however.

Well I' picked up a set of aluminum wheels from a GMC truck - 16". They dont' fit without spacers. The front calipers require a lot of room so it's safe to say they don't fit at all unless you were to use some thick spacers and long wheel studs. They didn't fit on the rear either, but should with a 1/2" spacer. Again, the rear calipers rub the wheel. With the right offset to move the outer part of the wheel more outboard, they would bolt right on. I think the aluminums don't fit due to the fact the aluminum is thicker than a steel wheel. I also tried a regular steel chrome wheel off a Chevy and had the same problems. Kinda weird that the spare tire rim on the Chevy fit but the regular steels don't. In any event, more to come.
