What is the best wheel/tire combo for a Prerunner style Titan?

hi there, what are the opinions on making our Titans a Prerunner style truck like the baja trucks, I do not want to compromise highway performance too much.

I have 17" wheels, would my best be just upgrading to 295x70 Tires like the terra grapplers?

Or 18" wheels with 325x60 work better?

Are 20's with a 315x55 out of the question?

THX in advance

First, stick with 17" rims, and keep the size to about 33". I know this might sound funny because I have 34.5" tires, but I was betting on finding rear end gears in the not so future...and a locker.

Depends. Do you want the prerunner look or are you building a real dedicated offroad only prerunner?

If the first, and I'm guessing this because this is what the majority of people do and it says you want to do a PRG, go with the 295s.

If the second, you would want true 16" bead locking wheels with 35+ tires.

I like my look, which would work well, but isn't as functional as a true prerunner. You'd want smaller wheels for serious offroading if you want the real thing.

Well....not many 16" wheels will fit the Titan, and real bead-lock wheels are not DOT legal.

Hence the comment of dedicated off road only vehicle.

Stick with the 17's for a 33" tire. Better to have as much rubber as possible in my opinion for the offroad. Highway cruiser the 18's would be nice and add some on road performance.

There are a ton of nice 17's out there now. robby G, walker evenas, even circle makes a great wheel, all these are beadlocks though (even though not DOT approved, noone i know have ever been given a ticket for them). Then you can get into many other 17's, i have an inexpensive wheel from america's tire co, it looks kinda like an RG wheel withouthe beadlocks, has about 1.5 more offset than stock and i run 35 12.5 17's. There is jsut a hair of rubbing at mid turn, but no clearance issues for the wheel cycling. no need to go any wider that 8" unless your into that look. Then get the full colpliment of Glassworks fiberglass for your truck.

Why are bead locks not DOT legal? Seems like a good idea to have them.

We argue this point all the time in the prerunner/race circles. Its more the fact that the manufacturers dont submit the wheels to get dot aproval, not so much that the product wouldnt meet thier standards. Racing fuel cells arent legal either, as are windshield bars for an interior cage. Or, get this, 5 point harnesses. Or aftermarket steering wheels. The list is very long, most cops are pretty cool about this stuff though.

Too much safety can't possibly be a good thing...

Thanks PRG!

I want the pre runner look and performance, without spending too much, no coilovers or stuff like that, Im not going to race this truck like crazy.

Will probably use the PRG 2" level kit and 1" lift for the rear, and want the best performing on/off road tire I can fit on the original wheels if I decide to keep a 17" wheel size.

I drive about 3 miles of rutted roads on my daily driving to the farm, I go about once a month to my ranch in where I have to drive about 20 miles of rutted out roads.

It may have something to do with the fact that the manufacturer has no control over how the products are installed or used, as well. You could buy the best restraint system money can buy, but installed incorrectly may be useless.

Size

I have attached my picture with my new wheels and PRG lift. I have 305/50R20's. I plan on changing the tires to 285/55R20 AT's when I get my next tires. I want to regain a little of the milage I lost going to the wider 305.

If you really want the pre-runner look, then go with 17" with a little offset, and the glass frt fenders. There are some real good looking simulated beadlock wheels, Axis makes a set I'd love to run....The Regulater looks awesome on a pre-run truck...

Not sure what sizes the Regulater comes in....

How about using 1" spacers with the oem 17" wheels to get the tires out of the fenders using 295x70r17TerraG tires, or 305x70r17 MT/Rs, maybe even 315x70BFG A/T but that will require alot of trimming...
