Getting wheel wells shaved... What size tire do you suggest?

Hi there, my truck is currently at the body shop getting some paint job done on a huge dent/scratch...

Well for $50 they will also shave the inner rear wheel wells about 3/4" right where bigger AKA 35" tires would rub...

I have a PRG kit right now with a 2" front and a 1" rear, I plan on getting later on either some Coilovers or a LIft kit like the pro comp or rancho...

I really want to go with some 35"x12.5"r17 BFG MTs on oem 17" wheels...

What do you guys suggest?

The main problem you are going to have is the stock rims are narrow. They are 7.5" wide. A good 35" would want a 9.5" wide rim.

EX Nitto Terra grapplers in 325-65-18 (34.9" tall tire) needs a 9-10".

285 is the recommended border for people who have 7.5" wide rims. 295 can be done but it is a stretch.

They also make a more aggressive Mud Grappler in 17". 35x12.5x17. They recommend 8.5-11" rims, preferring 10" wide. They are 34.8" tall.

Yes I know about the rim width recommended for large tires... I dont mind a little bit of extra wear in the middle of the thread, I wont be running the tires in any pressure below 10psi ...

Many people have run large and wide tires of the oem 17" off road wheels for example Greg who used the MT in 35x12.5r17 in the oem wheels, also several other people like loufish are runing wide ones...

Since the baja Truck used the BFG baja tires in 35x12.5r17 in the oem 17" wheels for the baja run that got him second place, Im not to worried...

Or should I be? THX

I was gathering some info on the 35" tires that I like and found out some info you guys would like to know...

BFG AT 315x70r17 34.5" 64lbs.
BFG MT 35x12.5r17 34.8" 55lbs.
GY MTR 305x70r17 34" 65lbs.
Toyo AT 35x12.5r17 34.8" 76lbs.
Toyo MT 35x12.5r17 34.9" 83lbs.

Thats some ugly extra weight on the Toyos, the BFG MTs have a nice weight not to much to affect performance vs the others...

well the reason a 325-65-18 needs a 9 to 10" wide wheel is because 325 mm is about 13.25 inches. i would recommend for a 12.50 tire that a 8 inch wide wheel be used so you can remove the rubbing issue caused by a wider wheel. and .5" is not that much, most of the time tires arent even 12.50 wide. i cant even count the number of titans we have lifted on factory wheels, one guy has already come back and he got almost 38k miles on a set of 35.1250.18 bfg mts on factory 18x8 wheels.

She also quoted me $50 for her to shave the inner "wheels" too. Sorry, I have to get this in.

K-MU,

Slap the 35" BFG's on the stock rims and be done with it. Rim width won't be a problem. What ever you do, don't buy a 10" wide rim. It'll look like crap.

You are right about that, I also like wide thread tires but hate FAT cheeked ones like when using wider wheels...

Well good news... I just tried the BFGs 35"x12.5"r17 once again after the wheel wells being shaved..

They FIT PERFECTLY... at full turn the have about 1/4" of clearance to the mudflap...

The BFG dealer only had 2 tires so I tried them both to see if they fit and on both sides I had about the same clearance, looks like the body shop did a great job on bending back about 3/4" on the wheel wheels/mud flaps...

Do you guys think I would have any rubbing somewhere else while offroading?

If you put them on prior to lifting, or leveling I would think you could hit the top of the wheel well arch. Especially if you bounce it. [But now I see you have the PRG level kit, so it would probably be ok unless you get air, or climb over boulders].

On my Titan there is only three inches between the tire top and the arch, (at the moment, with the balding Rugged Trails and pressure down at 32 psi). The tires measured about 32" front to rear, but 31" driveway to top of tire. So with new tread and full inflation, maybe only 2" of clearance. Add 35" tires and you loose another inch, so 1" left stock, and even stock we do have some wheel travel.
[In you case with the level kit you would have around 3"].

Also, if you ever go for the Total Chaos full long travel kit, (lower arms too, w/estimated 13" travel), I think you will need Glassworks fenders to fit 35" or 37" tires, because of the extra travel. OEM 33" size might be able to squeeze by without the Glassworks. ???

Any long travel kit with upper and lower arms will require flared fenders. They make most of theit travel by widening the track. If you don't put fender flares or fiberglass fenders you'll probably hit the tire on the fender lip at full compression. And it looks stupid also...

if you can please post pics of the "shaved" area. I'm really interested in how they did it. I might have it done myself.
