Goodyear Silent armor

I'm in the market to replace the miserable stock 18" tires. As we all know this is not an easy task. In looking around I found the GY silent armor tires in the 275/65/18 for a good price-$162.00 each. They have a 50k warranty and a decent looking tread. Does anyone have any experience with these? So far the few reviews I have found say the only draw-back is that they decrease the mpg.

That's a dead link. Tirerack doesn't list them in that size, but they still may be available.
They would be smaller than stock at 32" in height vs 32.8". They also look heavy, hard, and would probably suffer from dry traction. Hard outside and good wear usually = bad dry traction. Softer compounds are better for dry traction, turns, braking, etc. but don't last as long. If you are going up to that price, I'd get the Michelin Cross Terrain SUV. They are a superior tire and will cost you maybe $100 more. Only drawback to them is they are French. The GY did however get good reviews from the 3 owners who responded on Tire rack though.

I have them on now! I bought them because of the high tread wear rating but I really regret getting them now. They to wear to fast just like the GY's And now I have to buy a spare to match. I think I would stay with the Origional GY's. The silent armors are a very smooth driving tire and very well balanced.

Discount tire has the size/price, no too worried about the dry traction, I'm looking to improve the snow/slush, I'm in CO. That minimal size differece also doesn't bother me, it is less than the nitto's I'm also considering. Lets try this link: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....er+SilentArmor
it was missing the ? after the jsp.

Helinut, what is your regret? How many miles do you have on them? If they don't last the 50k, would you exercise the pro-rated replacement? Have you noticed any decrease in gas milage like the other titan owner in the review section of tirrack? Sorry for all the ?'s, I just courious.

I have 9,000 miles on them now and the tread is allready low. I would consider using the pro rated replacement. But I think now that they have me the pro-rated replacement cost will be high. No decrease in milage but your odometer will run faster showing you have more miles than you actually have due to the smaller size, and my speedo is 3 miles faster at 60mph. Like I said I would at least stay with the same size tire. The Silent armor is a nice tire and is quiet but for the reasons above I would'nt get them UNLESS they start making them in our size then MAYBE I would buy them again.

You will need to change the spare to because you cant run different size tires on the rear if you have a flat.

Again, they don't list any 18" ones. Here's the sizes and pricing page. Specs page also doesn't list them.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Sizes....er+SilentArmor

If I wanted better snow, I'd look at the BFG in 285/65/18 over these. The Michelin also rated well in snow and you could just go to a snow specific tire and get a set of used stock rims for them.

I understand that the size is not listed at Tirerack, after talking to a Discount Tire store they have that size available. Here is a comparison to stock size:

Section Width: 10.43 in 265 mm Section Width: 10.82 in 275 mm
Rim Diameter: 18 in 457.2 mm Rim Diameter: 18 in 457.2 mm
Rim Width Range: 7 - 9 in Rim Width Range: 7.5 - 9.5 in
Overall Diameter: 32.60 in 828.04 mm Overall Diameter: 32.07 in 814.57 mm
Sidewall Height: 7.30 in 185.42 mm Sidewall Height: 7.03 in 178.56 mm
Radius: 16.30 in 414.02 mm Radius: 16.03 in 407.16 mm
Circumference: 102.4 in 2600.9 mm Circumference: 100.7 in 2557.7 mm
Revs per Mile: 638.0 Revs per Mile: 648.5
Actual Speed: 60 mph 100 km/h
Speedometer1: 60.9 mph 101. km/h
Speedometer Difference: - Speedometer Difference: 1.645% too fast
Diameter Difference: - Diameter Difference: 1.63%

Are the TA'KO's worth the extra $70.00 per tire? They have an even greater size difference from stock.

If you want a snow tire you should go with a narrow tire. These are wider than the origional tires. For dry pavement they have a tenatious grip. But I would think they wouldnt fare so well in snow.

The T/As are exactly the same size as stock. The only size that matters is overall diameter. The stock is 265-70-18.
This is a 32.84" tire diameter.
The BFG is 285-65-18. This is a 32.82" tire. The GY is a 275-65-18 tire. This works out to 32.3"

Since makers can deviate slightly, I went to their sites for the accurate measurments. I couldn't find that size on Discount tire either. Went on Goodyear's site. They don't list a single 18" Wrangler Silent Armor tire. They only have Wrangler A/T-s in 275-65-18. They list this tire as 32.1" in outer diameter. BFG lists theirs as 32.8. GY lists the Wrangler SR-A in 265-70-18 as 32.6". Tirerack lists the Contis as 32.6 also. Either way, the BFG is much closer.

My Bad on the size, I was still thinking the Nittos in the 285/60. Anyway, are the ta/ko's worth the $70.00 extra? I was just told that the size quoted was a trial size from goodyear, and they are not producing it. Oh well. But here is the link to the tire.

http://www.goodyeartires.com/goodyea...ea=Light+Truck

Scroll down. Its there.

Re: Goodyear Silent armor

This is how to determine tire diameter:

tire size: 265 70 18

formula: 265 divided by 25.4= 10.433 ( This is the width in inches.)

10.433 x .7 =7.3 (this is the sidewall height)

2 x 7.3 = 14.6

14.6 + 18 = 32.6 " tire diameter.

This formula works with any metric size tire.
