I am not tire educated at all. I just purchased a set of offroad wheels from ebay and I am wanting to upgrade tires. I guess my first question is what size tire is the offroad. I know it is a 285, but is that a 33"? Next question is what size can i increase to without having to make any modifications to the fender wells, etc? Do you guys think a bigger tire will cause the rear end to fail quicker? thanks for those wno respond.
Re: What size of tires are on the off road Package?
The stock off-road tires are 285/70/17
This is 11.2" wide and 32.7" diameter. The section height is 70% of the 11.2" or 7.84"side wall height.
The next size up in the Nitto Grappler 295/70/17, but I don't recall if you need to trim or level to fit them. They are 11.6" wide and 33.3" dia.
I just bought the BFG AT KO in the 285/70/17. They are actually a little taller than the stock BFG Rugged Trails since I'm running them at 40 psi. and the RT were at 35 psi. and the stiffer side walls might also be a factor.
BTW Rugged trails are a passenger rated all season tire so are smoother than ATs, but wear out at less than 25,000 miles. Nice otherwise but some have had the side walls puncture off-road.
Re: What size of tires are on the off road Package?
The stock offroad tires are 285/70-17. A straight conversion from the P-metric system makes them 32.7"x11.2".
You can run a 33" tall tire on the stock rims no problem, but you needs to be careful about how wide you go.
I'm running 33x12.5's on a 17"x8" rim with 0 offset and 4.5" backspacing and I had to do a little trimming to fit, and I have about a 3" lift up front.

It is interesting to compare the reviews of the AT KO ("These are the best tires I have ever owned") to the Rugged Trail ("These are the worst tires I have ever owned") at www.tirerack.com
Re: What size of tires are on the off road Package?
I don't know of any other all season tires in the 285/70/17 size. So for the Hwy. they are most likely the smoothest, best handling tires out there, (in this size), since they can only be compared to ATs and MTs. I drive twisty roads, and they do handle very well. However, they are very costly if you have to replace them every 20-25k miles.
I've had them off-road several times and they were fine, and even near bald they climbed fine with the locker, and even went through a river rock course, with foot long oval rocks. They did fish tail badly when on a dirt road one time, but switching to 4HI controlled it quick.
But the tread on the ATs is much more aggressive, so will be even better off-road, and with all of those 60k mile + stories on TireRack, they will be much cheaper overall.
I do plan to drop the psi on them down to 35 too. I was just experimenting with gas mileage, and got/recovered maybe .5 mpg better at 40 psi on the 60-65 rated ATs. RT are 35 psi Max.
I also plan to sipe the ATs at the first rotation, which is better for wet roads, and is supposed to soften the ride a bit as well.
Re: What size of tires are on the off road Package?
This is my third set of BFG Rugged Trails, and I have never gotten more than 23,000 miles out of them. I had two sets on my previous Tundra and one set on my Titan.
Re: What size of tires are on the off road Package?
swarren - don't sipe your AT KO because you will void the warranty on your tires. The AT KO's also have a free off-road tow program so if you're ever stuck, they will tow you for free. If you sipe the tires, you won't have any warranty any more. Plus the tire already lots of sipes in them already.

Thank you!!! I check into it.

Hmmm...That is great! If I could do that, I would have definitely considered the BFG RTs as the replacements. I've called them ragged trails before, but for on-road they are great, and the only game in town for non-AT/MT tires, in the OR stock 285/70/17 size. However they are a P-rated passenger tire, not a LT-rated Light Truck tire.
For my usage, I could live with the P-rated, but the wear/cost factor was decisive.
Most of us, and even in this thread I see this, bald 'em to the wear bars before 25K miles.
The roads I drive have lots of curves and some of them are 10 mph and 15 mph posted curves. If you drive freeways, that might be the reason. In 24,000 miles, I've been on the freeway for, at the most, 250 miles in my Titan. My driving style is definitely sporty, but I drive well enough that I don't squeal my tires on corners or turn them into smoke clouds when leaving the stop signs.
If you look at my mods and planned mods in my sig., no headers or exhausts, air intakes, etc. And the off-roading I have mostly done is crawling at 5-7 mph with the locker, so no tire spin.
So do you run freeways, or mostly straight roads?
And what tire pressure do you run?
I always ran 35 psi on mine and checked them often.

Checked it out. Here's the straight information on siping and BFG.
BTW, when did BF Goodrich become part of Michelin Tire?

"1 Does getting tire siping by a tire dealer void the tire warranty?
Mine are 285/70/17 AT KO ATs
2 Do you still offer some type of off-road tow warranty?"

No, but Michelin doesn't recommend tire siping after market.
No, Michelin do not offer any type of road tow warranty.

So first I end up with a French truck and now French tires! Hope Michelin at least makes the BFG in America, like Nissan/Renault does with the Titan.
