Beleive it or not I've never had to hammer on the brakes until recently. On a side note I recently had the entire brake fix done.
Well... it recently snowed out here and when I went down the street the other day I applied the brakes and slid a little bit. Right when I started to slide the ABS kicked in and made a terrible grinding/rubbing like noise. I could feel the brake pedal pulsate a little. I expected the pulsing but not the noise.
Anyways... I tested it again this evening on wet pavement. Was going about 40mph and stomped on the brakes (If you ever do this for testing purposes I strongly suggest you make sure all objects in the vehicle are secure... lol ). The result? My Titan stopped very well as expected... but I did manage to get the front to start to lock up thereby causing the ABS to kick in and yes.... that damn grinding like noise occurred again.
Does this sound normal?

I am pretty sure that is normal if you are describing something like a ratcheting sound.

A raccoon ran out in front of me not long after my brake repair and I stomped the stop pedal hard with both feet....The truck made all kinds of weird noises (from under the dash, I think) and it stopped so fast that it sucked the moisture off my eyeballs, but not fast enough to save Rocky Raccoon. I drove by him every day for the next 3 weeks taking note of the many different stages of decompisistion.

That's the noise it's supposed to make. And although the noise is terrible, trh truck is doing it's job.
We got snow here as well, and I've been hearing it lately too, but with no worries.

Sorry to hear about Rocky. But... I don't care who you are.... thats funny.
Yeah thats it... ratcheting sound. Much better description.
Thanks for all your replies. Glad to hear that is normal.

Most ABS systems I've seen make a strange grinding noise.

my 1999 f150 made a whole lot more noise than my titan. i pretty sure the ratching noise its normal. all of the noise is made from the brake distribution box under the hood
I am getting the same grinding noise, and it doesn't sound right at all. In other vehicles with ABS I've never heard it sound like it does on my Titan.
The sound I am hearing is straight up metal-on-metal, same sound I've heard before on a vehicle where the brake pads were worn too low.
I'm going to have to go get the brakes replaced I'm sure of it...
This was my first vehicle that made this ridiculous noise also. I live where there's snow on the roads about 50% of the time from Dec-Mar. Every time I start the truck my hand automatically goes to the vdc off button so that I don't have to hear it when its at its loudest, when your sliding sideways. Your passengers cringe and feel like they're in a dollar store vehicle then they hear that. You can just take it easy on the brake pedal in snow and won't have to hear those noises ever. Do all years of titan make this noise?
