Hey,
Newby here.
I just had some OEM chromed rims installed. I Will post some pics but for now I have a question.
I was about 1 mile from the tire shop that did the install, had to stop kinda fast and i got an odd feeling in the brakes. It was like the anti lock function was working but i was nowhere near locking them up. It felt like they were sliding. I tried it again, same thing. Mashing the brakes but not emergency braking.
So i turn around and go back to the tire shop. I take the guy for a ride and we decide it is coming from the front, maybe drivers side.
He takes the wheel off and there seems to be no problem. He puts it back on and it still does it but is harder to get it to.
Back to the shop. We take off both fronts, the discs move side to side within the brake pads. Both sides do it. Looks like it might be normal cause both sides do it. Nothing else seems wrong.
Re-install the Wheels drive it again, it still does it but seems even harder to get to do it. Other info: 2006 no brake issues before.
Questions:
1. Anyone experienced this with new rim install? I also flipped the tires to blackwall but have not experienced anything like this. It is almost like the ABS is recalibrating.
2. Is it normal for the disks to move somewhat side to side within the brake shoes (Horizontal)?
Thanks for your help guys. This board is a great source of info. and very addiciting!

13 views but no opinions???
It is much better after the last time we re-installed the wheels.
Now it feels like the ABS although i have 5k miles and have never engaged them before. I can now.

no i am sure it is me. i was re-reading this and was confused.
1. Have you ever heard of the ABS being easier to engage after rim swap?
2. 2. Is it normal for the disks to move somewhat side to side within the brake shoes (Horizontal)?
Thank you!

dont think it has anything to do with the wheels. I could see maybe if you were to put some 24's on there and the extra weight being a factor but not just doing a chrome oe wheel swap.
Ah, the infamous brake issue? That was what i was afraid of.
Anybody know if their rotors/calipers will move slightly side to side? Looked like about a 1/4". It almost looks like they are made to do that. It looked like they were rubber mounted.

With the wheel off, there is nothing clamping the rotor, so not surprising that it would move.
P,
John Never called me back. Brakes seems to have gone back to normal. I have made a few quick stops without the sliding feeleing. It doersnt do it anymore which leads me back to "ABS had to re-calibrate???

hmm... he's off on Monday's I think, I will have him call you on tuesday or wednesday if you still want him to.
Just in case this thread is ever searched, I havent had a problem since. Everything feels fine. I read in one of the brake TSB's that extra care needs to be taken to re-install wheels to make sure to re-torque the wheels equally. Maybe the boneheads were just cranking down the lug nuts in a circular motion instead of the cross pattern. The final time they were installed was by the shop manager and he was very careful.
