Note: My Titan has the Off Road pkg. so I have the 17s, but it also came with the Big Tow package. If you have Big Tow alone you would have one of the 18" wheels/tires, but the load comparison below is typical of the difference between passenger and light truck rated tires.
The passenger rated BFGoodrich Rugged Trail P285/70/17 (an all-
season), is stock on the Off Road package.
It has a maximum load rating of 2833 lbs. at its maximum inflation of 35 psi.
The light-truck rated BFGoodrich AT KO LT285/70/17 (an all-
terrain), is a very popular aftermarket upgrade.
It has an maximum load rating of 3195 lbs. at its maximum inflation of 65 psi. but to even match the Rugged Trails load rating, you would have to run it at almost 55 lbs. psi. (while at 35 psi the BFG AT KO in this size, has a maximum load rating of only 2105 lbs).
The Rugged Trail is probably more cushy, handles better, and would probably make more sales at the psi values for the payload. It's biggest draw back is that they wear out
before 25K miles for most of us.
Many that buy aftermarket tires still get passenger rated tires. Here is a list I put together of 17" and 18" stock size replacement tires, (
both light-truck and passenger rated).
17" & 18" Stock size replacement AT tires.
