BFG 315/70/17 on Off Road or XE rims with PRG level?

This poll is for people that have put the BFG AT KO tire in the LT315/70/17 size, (34.5" diameter), on their stock rims, (with only a level kit).

The main question being did any rubbing you experienced require the pinch weld mod, (PWM). to be performed?

You can post if mud flaps required removal, and fender liners required heat gun shaping, etc. But the poll is for the pinch weld only for stock rims.

At least I didnt know what one was until I did a search on the website, thank you website and kartman, but I would imagine that you would have to do a pinch weld with just a leveling kit, because I have that size tire on an aftermarket wheel with a 6" lift and if I have the wheel cranked and go over something just right I get I little rub.

Aftermarket wheels usually have backspacing of 4.5" instead of the OEM 5.5". This is the cause of rubbing at the pinch weld. Seems like it would rub less since the rims stick out more but that is the cause, and it is even worse if the rim is wider. For example a 9" wide Moto Metal 951 with 4.5" backspacing is an infamous Titan pinch weld rub causer, even on lifted Titans.

I have the prg 2" fornt 1" rear w/ 315's on the stock off road rims. Took off the mudflaps and have only the slightest of rubs at full turn. No pinch weld modding was required for me.

I am looking to do the same set up that you have, could you post pictures of your titan so I can see what it looks like? Did you remove the mud guards because the tires rubbed on them when turning, or just because you didnt like the way they looked?

The mud flaps were taken off before the BFG's were put on.

Did you notice any decline in gas mileage when going to the 35 in tire?

Thanks,

Thanks Yeti77,

I really appreciate the pictures. I have an 04 that is just like your truck, so it gives me a great idea of how it will look.

Re: BFG 315/70/17 on Off Road or XE rims with PRG level?

I ran those tires for awhile, and not only did the PW mod, went further then needed with some aluminum sheet metal work...
Just had the rt side exhaust manifold replaced, the dealer mechanic didn't know where the aluminum came from, never seen one with before...(inner fenderwell had to be removed)

Re: BFG 315/70/17 on Off Road or XE rims with PRG level?

why did you go further? did it rub bad? i test fit a 315/70R17 on my off road spare rim and tried it out on the driver side front.... the tire was sore out in the center but had well over half tread at the edges. i removed the mudflaps and the tire just barely wiped the dirt off the fender liner.... should i go ahead and do the mod anyway? or wait until i get tires and then see how it goes? i'd hate to get tires on and realize i cant drive home because i cant turn without tearing my truck or the new tires up.... also if i hit a bump is the rubbing magnified? thanks in advance..

Re: BFG 315/70/17 on Off Road or XE rims with PRG level?

Sorry about bringing up an old topic, but there isn't a whole lot of feedback from these tires yet and I need to make a decision. My BFG rugged-trails on the 17" rims are just falling apart. There are cracks and splits all through the deepest part of the treads and they are only 2.5 years old with 17K miles on them. It looks like they are rotting? I have the 2" leveling kit, not the lift (wasn't sure if the rear blocks were all that necessary since the rear is still a little higher than the front).

Anyway, I came across one person that hasn't had any difficulties (maybe Vector??) and was hoping others tried this setup. Am not really thrilled about doing the pinch weld mod. I know I can always play it safe with the 285's, but would really like the largest tire that will work with the least effort.

I had purchased the discount tire lifetime rotate and balance plan with the super tire warranty, they talked me into it saying the replacement tire would be at least $240 apiece. I thought I was suckered, but if they replace my tires from a warranty perspective, that warranty was the best buy I've made this year.

Thanks
Steve

I might be wrong, but I think their warranty only covers road hazards, like a piece of metal.

Anyway, these trucks vary enough that even with the same exact options, yours might rub while someone else's doesn't ... it's at the hairy edge ... 34.5" diameter for the BFG AT KOand 34.6" diameter for the Mickey Thompson MTZ .

Here's a link to a post I made the other day, with a link at the bottom of it, that shows a few models you will be less likely to have issues with, (with stock rims). They are 33.5" to 34" diameter tires.
