It will definetly get you out of a bind, as far as drive train damage I would not think so as long as your not off roading it really hard.

I also have 35's on 20" wheels but I put a 35" tire on my oem spare rim and there is just a slight difference in size now. I have never had to use it but if I did it would work with very little problems if any. Oh yeah and yes it will fit in the spare tire spot under the bed.
