Titan vs. silverado 2500 Duramax

This happend a couple months back while on a cross country road trip. It was about 11:00 p.m. outside of Nashville Tn.
I"m cruising along at 70mph bascially the only vehicle on the road when I see a pickup closing in behind me at about 10-15 mph faster than me. Peaking in my mirror waiting for him to pass he pulls right on to my bumper than falls back and does what we call in the Supra world "a GM pass" which is to carry 10 extra mph than the other car your racing and blow by them. I don't respond he pulls over in front of me in my lane. Not to be out done I pull into the fast lane to pull side by side but he continues to slowly accellarate so we are doing 75-80mph, I slow down to 55 trying to get him to drop back so we can punch it at a somewhat resonable speed. He does not bite but does slow down to about 70mph and when I get next to him immediatly punches it and pulls a truck length on me before I can respond and he holds that distance till about 100mph which is much faster than I really would like to be racing since i'm in the middle of a 4K mile road trip. So we try again side by side I slow down trying to get him to start at 50-55mph again he kept going, so this time knowing that he's gonna hit it the second I get to his side i'm ready, then I see him riding his brakes and being a turbo guru I know exactly what he's doing, he's brake boosting(hold the brakes and gas at the same time to get the turbo pre spooled). We hit it he pulls an immediate half truck lead and holds it, his truck shifts first and I gain the half length back then my truck hits 4th gear and he gains a nose which at about 100 I gain back and then shut down.
I don't think his truck was stock due to the fact that through all of this I could hear his turbo over my own truck leading me to believe it at least had an intake, probably increased boost, also when he performed his "GM pass" it was blowing a mucho exhaust plume out a chrome 4-5in. tip exhaust. Without a doubt a fast truck and gave the Titan everything it could handle. I think he knew he would have gotten smoked hitting it at 50mph as his turbo would have taking longer to spool even when brake boosting where at 75mph turbo response was much more instant. It was an siverado 2500HD extra cab and I do believe it was a 4X4. I was pretty irratiatated that he wouldn't go from a slower speed. When doing freeway runs with my supra i'm in the same boat, faster i'm going on the punch the harder I will pull but I always give those pesky mustangs and camaro's a second chance going from a slower speed then just normally make up the jump and sail by at a demoralizing rate leaving no doubt who is producing more wheel horsepower. Was fun non the less, but can't call it a kill.

Power braking to build boost is done when you are at a standstill.

He must have had it chipped and all the other goodies, a stock duramax 1/4 is about 17 sec. 0-60 mph is about 8.8, with bolt ons and chip, etc. he will be a fast truck. ................Bear hunter you have a nice rig, i'd like to put a lift on mine but then it wouldn't fit in my garage, maybe some 33 MTR'S and thats about it. I have some pictures in my camera i need to recharge my batteries though. I will post pics. later.......Plus ive spent quite a bit on mods.
Good Day.............

Chepdog...looking forward to the pics. If you go 33's (305/70/16) make sure you have a 8-10" wide wheel or you will have irregular wear patterns and balancing problems down the road.

You should check out the DR 4.5 lift for your truck.

Well let's see. I have a buddy with a 2005 2500HD Crew Cab, Duramax/Allison combo. He's added a 4" Banks exhaust, K&N Filter, and reprogrammed ECU with a Granatelli Predator. He's putting out about 440hp and 825lbs of torque. I would hope he could eat my lunch.

Beware the late model diesels. It only costs about $3000 to produce 500hp and 1,000lbs of torque with bolt-ons on the newer diesels. Just visit the diesel forums. There is one guy I heard about running 9.70's in a 1 ton!!!

Yeah, and for about 6 grand you could get some type of forced induction, whenever it comes out, and eat him for lunch!

I don't know a lot about diesels, so I may be completely wrong in my thinking, but lots of hp and torque don't necessarily equate to speed. I'm talking diesel here, and of course, there's always exceptions to every rule. I know someone who has a new Dodge Ram 2500 w/ the Cummings Diesel inline six-sylinder w/ turbo. It produces 385 hp and 612 ft lbs of torque. And I'd be wiling to be a soda that a Titan could beat it.

So I agree that with about 3,000 worth of add-ons, it should be able to beat your, or any Titan. (Maybe not head's though). But stock, or with just a fews minor mods, I don't know....

It means exactly that...and there are top end speed eliminators. There have been modified diesels that show 150-160 on the dyno with injectors etc...

If your numbers are correct...I think the Titan would win as well, but it will be close.

Maybe i can be a bit of help here, my F250 6 liter diesel 4x4 about the same specs as the (Dodge diesel) with the (airaid intake, 4' turbo back from Bassani, and the Max micro tuner 150hp setting) ran beside my friends 2003 Mustang GT 5spd, with full bolt ons (intake, headers, pulleys, catback, and chip he ran a 13.4 at 10? mph with street tires, bad traction), i ran him until about 90 mph, he didnt pull much, about half a car from a rolling 5 mph start, now though its a different story, with a bigger intercooler (20+hp) and 80hp propane shot he gets a load of smoke, actually they are not really to bad like the 7.3 liter diesel, now those you will see pitch black. Hopefully that helps a little, also the Ford 5 spd automatic shifts flawless versus the Dodge 4 speed automatic.

Huh? You mean the guy running 9.70's? I think he spent a bit more than $3000. I've ridden in and driven my buddies Duramax 2500HD on the top programmer setting and I do believe he would eat my lunch. It goes from 0-Wow really fast. We will find out soon though since he wants his shot at the track sometime this summer.

Brake boosting is doing the same thing, only while you are rolling. Give the
vehicle enough brake to keep it at a steady speed, and enough gas to build
boost to the peak range. When you let off the brake, the turbo is already
spooled, thus, no turbo lag.

I got to drive the Dodge yesterday ( we went to lunch), and I have to say, I still don't think (stock) it would be a Titan. It goes, but its no fast. It seems to take a while to get moving. But with that said, I'm not used to driving a turbo, so it could be operator error. But even with some help from my friend on how to spool it up, it still just didn't seem to wanna go. Good top-end though...

And just to add to this...These diesels that are modified running low 13's. The head is running a 13.7 (sorry head, had to use ya') with some mods and a little shot. Wait until some good after market parts come out for the Titan. You'll see 12's for sure!

I have no clue what this thing had for mods but it was loud and smokey if that means anything LOL. I know he wasn't putting much if any more H.p. to the wheels than me as he never really pulled me. I would creep at the top of each gear where he seemed to have his best pull was immediatly after shifting at the bottom of each gear. If I had to guess i'd say he was pretty much stock minus an intake/exhaust. Punching it at 70 mph vs. a slower speed I think really gave him an advantage. He could use his torque to punch through the wind. Also me having the tow gears probably hurt a little running from these speeds. I never really got a fair launch, he beat me to the gas pedal each time, I was just trying to get him to slow down and do it from a slower speed as we had the entire freeway to ourselves. I"m pretty sure if we went from 50mph it would have been a different out come.
