Titan Vs BMW 540 automatic

On my regular commute home - one of the right turn lanes on my route routinely builds up a line of polite people who patiently wait their turn and eventually make a right. Unpolite people/jerks tend to try to bypass the line and sneak down the middle lane and cut in when an opening occurs (openings always occur) or worse do what some dolt in a 540 did to me......

Make a right hand turn across a white line from the middle lane and hope the poeple in the right turn lane dont swing wide.

Sure enough Mr. BMW doesnt wait and makes a right hand turn from the middle lane - I was about to pass the car in the middle after the turn and MR bimmer lays on the horn and flips me off. A real ballsy move since he made an illegal right across a solid white line.

I stop my pass - swerve to the right, and as I do I punch it and so does he within 1/8 of a second of me- I hear his tranny kick down.

We sail past the car in the middle lane and surprisingly im pulling him! Within 1/4 mile Ive got him by enough distance to easily pull in front of him.

I signal for another left and so does he and miraculously were the only 2 side by side in the next turn lane.

I roll my window down and eyball him steaming at his bad driving while being amused he couldnt outrun my "truck" but he wont meet my gaze because he knows not only did he drive like a shmuck- he got shut down as well.

As we begin the lazy slow lefthand turn and I rolled my window up- it reminded me of an old joke-

Whats the difference beteen a bmw and a porcupine?
With a porcupine the pricks are on the outside.

Man I don't know what year BMW 540 auto that was but I had a 98 and it ran 14.4s@98mph in the summer heat. Those cars stomp booty on the big end. If your truck is stock, he must have had some engine issues or something. On a side note - I hate inconsiderate drivers who think it's a nascar race on the freeway.

maybe his a/c was on. I know I can definitely feel a difference in acceleration when my a/c is on. I wonder how much of a difference it would make in a 1/4 mile run?

Good race!

Yep, they handle good because of the hydraulic suspension, but the 530's are a little sluggish down low. I think the 540's have 282hp and about 310tq. 0-60 in about 6.5 sec and 1/4 mile in 14.7. Not too far off what a exhaust/intake Titan KC (2wd) runs. Those 540's weigh close to 4000lbs.

On a titan, 0.15 sec and 1 mph. I accidently left my e-fans on with the manual switch and it energized the A/C compressor clutch on a couple of runs. I use the A/C input to signal the fans on with a switch when in the pits cooling down.

Could be he had the air on- I didnt for sure were 2 miles from the pacific ocean and it was 74 degrees outside-

Maybe he backed off. all I know is that I had him by more than a vehicle length in under a quarter- I did get the jump on him though.

Perhaps he didnt give it the full stomp thinking I was only driving a a truck.

I was suprised I know the 540's can roll.

Sixty mph is yours in 5.5 seconds, same as a 282-hp 540i we tested in 1998. But the older, less powerful car, which was 232 pounds lighter, was 0.9 second slower to 100 mph and two seconds slower to 130 mph.

Thats from car and driver but i dont think it was 5.5 ive always heard 6.

Our 545i cleared the quarter-mile in 14.1 seconds at 103 mph, an improvement of 0.2 second and 6 mph over a 3924-pound automatic-transmission 540i we tested in 2001.

Thats all from car and driver.

I had an incident the other day with one of those new volvo wagons. I'm enjoying my ride home in Tiny (my trucks name) with the new brakes my dealer put on
(got them on second incident, WOOHOO!) Its a merge lane were most people politely take turns. So I'm merging and I let the guy next to me pull ahead because he let the guy in front of me merge in. Just as I go to take my turn I can see this volvo on my left tryin to snake in and force his way in. I just kept merging towards him, I figured if I was in a brand new wagon thats half the size would I want to play chicken with a Titan? Expectedly he backed off. Funny thing is he tried to overtake my once the lane opened up..... Never even came close.

I own both a Titan and an '00 540iA. The BMW definitely *feels* much quicker than the Titan, but I have not run them against each other. Nor timed them.

I, like most everyone else, have mumbled to myself hundreds of times..."a-hole" at people driving beemers.

Then I bought one...

Now I must constantly remind myself (don't be the a-hole, don't be the a-hole) when driving it, because the car really does like to be driven fast.

Now having said that....guess what sat in my garage for two straight months after I bought the Titan - the BMW - cuz driving the Titan was more fun.

F.W Titan I Love the f-22 logo! (Air superiority- “It’s an American thing”)

Just so you guys know my feelings on the brand-
I’ve Owned 2 Bimmers now a 325IS and a Z3 (for those who have read my posts “the z3 was called – the “wife’s car”)

I don’t really like the BMW brand after my experiences during the ownership of two vehicles.

That said this guys rig (this 540) just didn’t haul A enough based on whatever the scenario was at the time.

The report is true, if you catch him sleeping his yours.

Davegvg,

It's not an F-22, it's an F-35 (aka the Joint Strike Fighter). Kinda look the same from the side, I guess. One engine only, though.
And actually, that is a picture of the X-35B. The X versions were "concept demonstrators." We are now assembling the first of the "production" versions.

BMW could've supplied Car & Driver with a ringer. In fact, with the way C&D usually goes gaga over most imports in their articles (does Porsche come to mind?), I would expect it.

The auto manufacturers like to zip up the performance of their cars when magazines test them. I'm sure they use different fuel mapping, run 93+ octane and other tricks of the trade.

If you take a 540/545 that can run low to mid 14's, then I can see how a Titan could perhaps keep up with the bimmer if you get the jump on him. Titan's are good for high 14's to 15 flat stock. The VK56DE is deadly in the mid to higher RPM's.

IMO, Nissan needs to design a new Halo car to showcase the awesome power of the VK56DE. Our engines in a lighter sedan or 2 seater sportscar would simply annihilate the competition.
