War StoriesThis section is for discussion of any races you may have particpated in. If you smoked someone like a pack'o'cools, let us know. Likewise, if you got beat... let us know by what, so we can keep an eye out for it next time.
Went to the strip last night to race my buddies 03 chevy Z71 5.3L with outlaw cold air intake, gibson cat back and the westin? 93 octane tune. I have a bone stock 04 CC 4x4 titan SE, Z71 weighed 5200 pounds and my titan weighed 5333 lbs both with driver.
I didn't give the Z71 all that much credit going into the match up, I have previously easily beaten all Hemi 4x4's owned by friends and family, and destroyed them with ease. So figured the Z71 wouldn't have much for me. All I can say is the 5.3L responds nicely to the above mod's, still couldn't beat the Titan but quicker than the Hemi 4x4's i've run. Anyway's we lined up 3 times, Titan winning all 3 on slip. Best times where 15.42@88.79, and later ran a 15.47@89.05. Z71 best time was a 15.59@87.97.
Where as in head to head match ups with hemi's i could fall asleep at the line, loose a truck length and still pass them by the 1/8 mile mark, the Z71 had enough power to hold me off the entire run if I got out reaction timed. Even though I won it was still somewhat humbling. Other truck times noted, stock Z71's ran between 16.2-16.4, 04 Ford F-150 17.0 LOL, 02 tacoma quad cab with 100 shot nos ran a 15.1. No hemi's where even there.
Chevy 2 valves are good-their hp claims are like Ford-Dodge
Those Chevy 2 valve motors are good-good power, good mpg.I constantly argue with a Chevy buddy of mine of Chevy's refusal to enter the 1990's with a OHC 4 VALVE V-8.He simply points out the good mpg and decent hp that Chevy gets with their 5.3(and honest 295 or whatever) and the 6L( a much stouter 345 hp than the Hemi 345).
Fords much more recently designed 5.4 3 valve has nothing over the Chevy 5.3 which should be a more compact(sideways valve cover to valve cover) motor.Of course being a typical cheapout Ford(3 valves???-same thing my 1983 Honda MC has).Charlie
No mods planned yet, first want to pull a 15.2 in stock form. On the last run of the night I folded the mirrors in and got my first 89mph trap. Also only pulled a 2.37 60ft and ran a 15.47. So I know with a 2.2 60ft. which I have pulled before she has a 15.2 run in her.
I was suprised the chevy was lighter than the titan so i'm sure that helped. Also I would pull the Z71 hard off the line if he wasn't in auto 4wd. His mods obviously did help some but he is stuck running 93 octane and still a tad slower than a 4 door titan.
Here's the numbers, my best two runs and his best run.
I'll try folding the mirrors in next time. I've been running with street trim...haven't removed any excess weight, i.e., tailgate, spare, etc. Also, on my last run, I manually reset the ecu and picked up .10 seconds. Thought I'd try this, since on the 350Z's, which use the same ecu logic, they usually pick up between 5-7 hp on the dyno after a reset. I'm gonna try to do this each time I go to the track (after a run or two) to see if the results are consistent or not. Could just be a fluke.

Removing the spare didn't do much. With the spare in, 88 deg. temps I ran a 15.45, with spare out and temps in the low 70's improved 3 hundreths in et and 7 hundreds in trap speed. Where as folding the mirrors netted a 2 tenths mph gain and if it wasn't for the poor 60ft time would have been a 15.3 easy. I was really suprised how much a difference the mirrors make.
Thanks for the Ecu reset tip. Thought about doing that will do next time. I've never reset mine and it has over 22K miles.

why did you need to reset? did your mpg's or performance lack over time?
how did you do the manual reset? unhook from the battery?

I think he said he did a manual ecu reset (disconnected the battery i guess).

Go to the link Tortuga posted for instructions. This is the only "for sure" way of doing the ecu reset, short of playing the waiting game by doing a battery disconnect. Is it 15 mins, 2 hrs, 24 hrs? Why guess.....just reset.
The reason I do a reset is to bring back a few hp lost due to the "adaptive technology", as it's been referred to, that our ecu's are based on. When you're just driving around in a normal fashion from day to day, the ecu adapts to the way you drive...things like throttle position, how fast the throttle and pedal sensors are moving, etc. When you reset, you clear the ecu's RAM of all these values that have accumulated over time...so it takes the ecu back to factory default values. This is why you may have noticed that your truck doesn't feel as strong as it was when it was new.
Now if you drove your truck hard and fast all the time, or even most of the time, then of course the ecu would adapt to this as being "normal" and you wouldn't lose anything. But we don't drive that way all the time (well, most of us!) so it's going to adapt to the routine drives to work, grocery store, etc.

Yeah, the pedal gets a work-out, for sure...as well as your brain while you're sychronizing the various steps of the procedure with your trusty stopwatch. But once you do it a few times...it gets easier. I've done it probably a dozen times successfully, but rarely will I have success on the first try.
