Re: Anyone race a 98 5.7L

I don't think I said anything about me beating anyone did I? I just wondered if anyone had. I am curious. You guys always talk about the newer engines and I figured maybe someone had raced an older GM motor. But thanks for the smart*** remark

Re: Anyone races a 98 5.7L

On the street I've ran a few, a 97 Z71 extended cab and a non 4x4 version as well. The Z71 fared the worst, when I hit 100 he was at least 3 to 4 trucklengths back. The 4x2 was a bit closer but not by much, the 5.3 is a bit stronger than the older 5.7. I used to have a 97 Suburban with the 5.7, it was a pig but my friends truck with a few mods ran much sweeter.

Re: Anyone races a 98 5.7L

I owned a '98 5.7L Silverado Z71. I had Hypertech programmer, larger throttle body, dual exhausts, and K & N filter. The truck ran good maybe 275HP 350TQ. It had 255HP stock. The problem with this motor versus newer ones is the injection system. The module sits inside the intake manifold along with all the fuel line runners. This severly hampers airflow above 4000RPM. Which is why this engine falls flat above 4500 RPM. The same motor in a boat with a 4-barrel carb had 320HP. GM traded high RPM HP for a little more lowend torque. The Silverado is about 250-300lb's lighter than a comparable Titan. The Titan has so much more HP and TQ than the 5.7 GM. Plus it revs out much longer.

The vortec isn't a very good motor. They blow too many head gaskets. You need an LS1 or LT1, etc.

Re: Anyone races a 98 5.7L

OK I give up. I know that my pulling motor isn't as powerful as the Titans. I wasn't trying to compare HP and torque. And you have to take into account the gearing going on. The 350 was a "low grunt" motor which made decent power at lower rpms. I can top out at 100 (which is what all stock Chevy trucks do in 98) at 3300 in 3rd gear. I can hit 0-60 in 7 seconds and hit my limiter in 13.

Re: Anyone races a 98 5.7L

I owned a 98 C1500 reg cab SB Vortec350 (255hp) 3.42 limited slip with the only mods being a K&N and a dual exhaust (flowmaster)

I purchased the truck new and the only problems I needed to repair was a waterpump and a alternator.

In so far as speed it held its own against the other trucks from that time period, but it wouldnt fair to well against whats being sold today.

Re: Anyone races a 98 5.7L

I towed a 8000 lb travel trailer with 5 occupants in my old Suburban with it loaded to the gills. The weight distribution hitch was a must but she pulled true. It didn't have the torque for those nasty headwinds I encountered many times but with the wind I could roll on out. I have nothing bad to say about the 5.7 that I put 170k miles on and never had a problem out of it, I wasn't babying it either. My new truck has it bested in every area except space inside.

Re: Anyone races a 98 5.7L

As you can see from your dyno chart, you have low end grunt but no top end. You stop at 200hp. Stock its rated at a 9 second 0-60 and a 16.8 quarter. In comparison, this is similar to the F150 and the titans and Hemis are in the low 7s and low 15s.

98chevyz71, what did you do, bolt on a supercharger? I owned my '98 Z71 for 6 years and put 80,000 on it. But that truck even with the mods I did wouldn't do 0-60 in 7 seconds or 0-100 in 13 seconds. Plus I think you meant 3300 RPM in overdrive with 3.73 gears like I had.

Now don't get me wrong, I really liked my Chevy. It hauled a$$. Not to start a rage here but short of supercharging or nitrous those numbers are really far fetched.

0-100 in 13 seconds would most likely be the quarter mile ET also.

255HP, 5000lb truck doesn't = 13 second quarter mile.
