Remember back to one of my very first posts about a little blue Scion I tore to pieces? Well, I encountered a new Maxima in almost identical conditions yesterday evening. Ran down the road to the liquor store(I go through a bottle of Wild Turkey Rare Breed about every 2 months) and coming home, I completely missed the little white Maxima that was in my blind spot as I hit my blinker and moved over to the right to catch the exit to get off onto the Tollway.
He blasts his horn and starts pounding his brights at me, so I throw my hands up apologetically(All one can really do at that point) and take my exit, him exiting RIGHT behind me. No sooner does a piece of asphalt open up and he blasts by me on the outside laying on his horn.
I take mental note to myself that it has that 3.5 emblem under the left taillight, and I grimace to myself and don't even bother trying to catch him. DAMN, those have long legs on the freeway, as I've seen on a couple occasions.
In the distance, I follow him and see him braking unneccesarily coming up to a green light, which he ends up catching. I shrug and change lanes so I'll end up next to him. This is exactly where I had met that Scion.
So I'm sitting there, windows down, music going, and he has his window down and screaming his head off. After a couple seconds of that, he rolls his window up and revs his engine a couple times. I'm thinking to myself various things right now...
1. I've never toyed with the 3.5 from a stop, but had my @ss handed to me on the freeway by a couple.
2. This dude is really being a 9rick.
3. Damn, I just filled the tank, and have a case of beer in the back seat. Lotta extra weight.
4. Oh crap, the light just changed!
I had only a few seconds to think about all this as the light changed. The split second I heard his tires break loose, I slapped it. Straight to the floor.
As expected, I rode his bumper for a couple hundred yards, but then that bumper pulled away steadily. He ended up exiting off before I even got TO the exit.
I'd have given him his props if he wasn't such a walking 9enis wrinkle about the whole thing. I do give the car alot of props though. Once they get rolling, they are damn fast little cars. The 2.5 on the other hand is a joke in comparison.
Anyways... The Hemi falls to a Nissan!! I feel no shame though. I lsot to a faster vehicle.

I to got beat by a altima w/ a 3.5 liter..I did o.k. at first because my RT was a little faster, but after that it was bumper fading away fast. It was still fun. I know it isn`t a maxima but i think it is the same motor and as fast..
You are right those Damn Maxima's are fast as hell. My friend has one and I toyed with him a little a while back. From red light to red light I did ok but after he got going he left me pretty easy. They are light and the 3.5 engine has really nice power. Anyway no shame in getting beat by a pretty fast car.
Xterra??? Maybe if I race one on foot it'd be a close race. I'll keep my Nikes in the truck and see if I can track one down.
Since 05, the Xterra's have that same 3.5 engine....so you might get a surprise....the manual version is a 6 speed....I hope you don't mistake one for a previous year model...there's quite a difference.

Oh, no kiddin? Well, I might be making a post one day about how shocked I am getting my butt handed to me by an Xterra! Although... the Xterra is substantially heavier than a Maxima/Altima. Likely be a closer race. Plus I would imagine they're geared much different.
Yaknow... 2-3 years ago, we were looking at the Xterra for my wife. She lvoes the offroad, rugged kinda appearance they have with all that plastic trim and roof rack and such. Admittedly, it's not a bad looking truck.
Anyways, we went and test drove a couple that were fully loaded(Both were Automatic with V6) and they were DOGS. I mean they had like NO power. We were both really let down about it cause she really wanted one. We ended up getting her a Saturn Vue (SUV) instead, fully loaded with AWD, V6, leather, blah blah blah. She loves it and it's quite frisky for a Saturn SUV.
Anyways, I'd be curious to see how much better they are with the 3.5 and a 6sp latched onto it.
I don't recall seeing one....and my wife drove her's to work....but that engine is standard in all of them now, just like the Titan only comes with the 5.6 engine. I usually have to see the headlights on the X's to guess the model year. The older/slower ones have round eyes....so if you beat one, I guess you could look back in the rear view....
The Maxima has always had one of the best engines on the market in a midsize sedan since the 80's, and its nice to see Nissan has put thier knowledge to good use by develpeding one of the best, if not the best truck engines out thier.
The maxima's and altimas with the VQ V6 are awesome cars.
I would hesitate to go looking to race a 05 or newer xterra, but interested to see what happens. They have a 4.0 liter V6 with CVT for 265 hp and 285 lb/ft. Plus they have about a 600 lb advantage in weight in 4x4 and almost 1000 lbs in 4x2. My wife and I are looking these over for a replacement to our aging Grand Prix. Cant wait to test drive one.
